Kısaca açıklamak gerekirse, temel fonksyonlar (count, sum,min, max…)her iki tip içinde geçerli olsa da aralarındaki en önemli fark; Aggregate functionların sonucunda gruplanan veri kümesinden her tekil grup için 1 kayıt dönerken, Analytic fonksyonların sonucunda, fonksyona giren kayıt sayısı ne kadar ise toplamda da o kadar kayıt sayısı kadar sonuç elde edilir. Aggregate fonksyonlar genellikle GROUP BY söz deyimi kullanılarak yazılırken, Analytic fonksyonlar OVER söz deyimi ile beraber kullanılarak yazılırlar.
