This document discusses the usefulness and limitations of taste sensors in evaluating the palatability and taste masking of oral dosage forms. It describes two types of taste sensors - the Insent Taste Sensing System and the Alpha-ASTREE electronic tongue. The Insent system uses lipid polymer membranes that can detect different tastes, while the Alpha-ASTREE uses electrodes in an organic membrane to detect taste interactions. Combining a taste sensor with an apparatus to measure disintegration time can help predict the palatability of orally disintegrating tablets. Overall, the author concludes that both taste sensing systems have benefits and drawbacks, but combining one with disintegration testing provides a useful way to evaluate orally disintegrating tablets.
