Digipak I will analyse the front and back covers, as these are the 2 parts that a possible listener will see if they bought the digipak in-store
Dark outer sides, connotations with “peep hole” or secrecy or magic. Light graffiti, emphasises “magic” idea, the way it is written looks child-like, giving it a “fairy” look. Band name at bottom right, the last place we look at. Golden hue of background acts as a complimentary colour to the blue writing The magic of the font mixes with the fact that it is graffiti, giving connotations of urban life in a modern, youth orientated world. The “mist” coming from the writing also emphasises the “magic” effect.
Other points on front cover Urban setting, creates connotations of indie lifestyle Basic cars in background, for example a Vauxhaul is used rather than a Bentley, this creates a very audience friendly cover. It allows the audience to relate to the band and the music The fact that it is a basic estate also allows the audience to relate and connect with the band, making them more likely to buy the album
Magic effect carries on with the back cover. Legal information and contact details are conventional. Zoomed in version of the front cover, with a new effect created. The video relates to this “magic” by having the protagonist taken to an alternate universe
Magazine Advertisement I will analyse the advert that we created as a group
Very different from the album, which challenges the convention that all of the aspects of the album release should have the same style. Very colourful, showing that the band is colourful and bouncy. 19/11/2010 is an optimum release date for the album as it leaves enough time for major fans to buy it and then it is just in time for Christmas Advertising both the album and the tour, which is common as it saves creating 2 separate adverts. This then creates hype with the audience as no dates are stated – sort of like a cliff hanger Common convention to have the musician on the advert.
Music Video I will use screenshots of my music video and analyse them
Common convention to have band name and title of song at beginning of music video Black, introduces song and works well with no beat of drums yet
Convention to show musician playing the song Challenges the convention that an artist should stay in one place throughout the music video
Playing on stereotypes or norms (the way I swapped the norms around) TV watching people, instead of the other way round Student teaching teachers The odd reflection in the mirror Person in suit (meaning he should be “well-off”) is eating rubbish and begging on the streets
Continued… Walking out of one setting and arriving at a completely different setting. This is similar to what we encounter in dreams Girls acting like male yobs, spitting and wearing Hoodies Older woman playing on games console
Challenging conventions by having the musician and the protagonist meet Light behind musician, giving conventions that he is a saviour, however the darkness may show that he is a curse as well as a blessing
