Using Evernote A simple guide to using Evernote in your job search and much more. TNG Presentation – October 29, 2009 Steve Rheault
So what exactly is it? Evernote is a cloud-based storage system that allows you to store, organize and retrieve electronic files of all sorts using a variety of platforms. You can upload up to 40 MBs of data per month for free (or 500 MBs of data for $5/Mo or $45/Yr). It works from your browser or as an application for Window’s and Mac computers, or from many mobile devices such as iPhones and BlackBerries.
Is it safe and secure? In general, it is as secure as your email. While it is a great place to store nearly everything, key financial records and passwords should probably use more a more encrypted storage method. Evernote keeps your PC or Mac synchronized with the cloud-based copy of your database so you can also access it locally if the net fails you. Information is all stored in XML format so that it is transportable if anything happens to Evernote.

How do I get it? Go to www.evernote.com and click on the Get Started link to sign up for a free account. Then go to the downloads section. You’ll want an application for your OS (Mac or Windows), a web Clipper for your browser and possibly a client for your smart phone. Note the email address they give you when they confirm your information. You’ll need it if you want to email stuff directly into your Evernote database . @myEN works for the twits! How I’ve set things up… “ There is no use in having storage with infinite capacity if it also has infinite retrieval times.” Notebook names, tags, attributes, titles and key word searches will all serve to help you find what you are searching. My goal is that items end up in one notebook, and that tags be used to keep things simple. Notebooks for everything vs tagging…

Creating a Tag System Special characters, .star, nesting, simplicity such as separating car and license, order issues in mobile devices…
Searching using Tags Select one notebook or all notebooks, Ctrl to multi-select…
Attributes Some fields set, some changeable such as Status Date, point out Usage bar…
Change Subject Date to Track Can play with columns and order, subject date is key for this…
Putting it altogether… Browse all the ads and “clip” the good ones Clean out the @Inbox to the Do’s and tag Do the Do Now s, tag and then archive Do the Do Soon s and Do Whenever s when you get a chance and then tag and archive Add more tags as you need them but keep them simple and universal Be prepared to be able to find stuff quickly
What all can I put in there? Emails using the account they give you, others can also put stuff in there for you. Pictures if you have the capacity, and Evernote will do complex OCR on all images and store keywords – voice notes too! Files of all sorts, PDFs are read for keywords etc., and web pages are easily clipped. Screen captures… that’s how I got the images. So you can store recipes, pictures of children’s projects, serial numbers, room dimensions, paint codes used in rooms, references, quotes…
