Using Lot Quality Assurance Survey (LQAS) for local
program monitoring

                   ABEL MUZOORA
Background
What is Lot Quality Assurance Sampling?
• LQAS is a simple, low cost random sampling
     methodology.

 Can be used locally, at the level of a “supervision area,”
     to identify priority areas.

 Can provide an accurate measure of coverage at a
     more aggregate level.

 Can enable targeting of interventions within a district.
What are the LQAS Principles?

Objectives
  Build consensus on;

 LQAS as a low cost approach to monitoring and
      evaluation of AMREF activities

 Increase on partnership in data collection, analysis
      and utilization

 Share LQAS results to strengthen research and
      Innovation

improvement in AMREF’s
Africa Advocacy Agenda

      KEY PARTNERS WHO HAVE USED LQAS;
       MOH,USAID(STAR-EC,UPHOLD)UNICEF
Methods
• Descriptive analytical cross-sectional survey in
5 sub counties (S.A) using LQAS methodology

• 19 villages are sampled from each of the five
  ‘Supervision Areas’ in the district.
       (Households were randomly sampled.)
• Tabulation and analysis of data at a common
  venue for all sub counties

• Key informant interviews(DHT/HWs)s and
  FDGs(VHTs) were children (0-11 months)
        Mothers with also applied.
                    Women (15-49)
Selected results

• Availability & use of ITNs
    by children under 5 years
    old

• Comparing ANC
    attendance LQAS results

• IPT Utilization
Percentage of married women 15-49 years
    modern family planning contraceptive methods

P

43.2% of U5 sleeping under LLITN
Comparing LQAS and Other Surveys
Conclusions

• LQAS offers a unique
  opportunity to obtain
  evidence based data that is
  critical for planning.

• The speed of collection
  and ready availability of
  data provides
  districts/projects with quick
  data access.
Recommendations

 Strengthen research and Innovation is key for
    AMREF business plan.

 Through the LQAS, project proposals and plans
will be based on relevant and timely data.

 AMREF HQ considers rolling and strengthening
    LQAS methodology in country programs.
