The Numbers – Dec. ‘09 20% total unemployment May ‘09 – 22.9mil unique visitors searched job boards - up 37% from 5/08 people online up - # site visits down Today 200 mil sites – 15 years will increase 40 fold 11/09 - 1 mil blog posts daily 11/09 - 5 BILLION tweets already
In  6  months we’ve moved from needing an internet presence as a  DIFFERENTIATOR   to it now being simply a   QUALIFIER .
Your Retirement Is Farther Off Than You Think You  MUST  be proactively managing your career Your resume is  NOT  enough You have to develop  social capital  to increase your chances of being found “… effective presentation of who you are, regardless of medium, is the first step in opening doors of opportunity” –  Garr Reynolds , Presentation Zen
Developing Your Online ID Goal #1 – Make it easy for people to find you Goal #2 – Control what they find Embrace SEO – all about  KEYWORDS Not being found by search engines means you don’t exist Control your page rankings Easiest ways to control rank: LinkedIn, Facebook, own domain, blog
Make it EASY to be Found! Pick a consistent name  mike lally NEVER michael Lock in that name on all social media sites (knowem.com – 150 sites) Get a decent headshot. Go to Clix. Buy a domain of your consistent name $10 to register! Put your resume on it
Pick Your “Home Base” You need a place to send people personal domain, blog, LinkedIn, Facebook? Submit to google – google.com/addurl Build your google profile! Claim home base on technorati and top search engines Blogs – not everyone has a voice Don’t unless you can keep your content fresh Blog about what you want to be known for – not your kids or your bizarre hobby
Hiring Managers Use Social Media to De-Select You Jobvite 2009 survey of HR and talent managers 95% use LinkedIn 59% use Facebook – UP FROM 36%! 42% use Twitter Not being found means  YOU DO NOT EXIST!
Mike’s Social Media Rules No complaining – EVER! Remove anything negative about old jobs. Remove people from social networking sites that will embarrass you Fill out EVERY “About” page Synch your social media All social media point to “home base”
LinkedIn Google ♥ LinkedIn You MUST change your public link to your consistent name!  This helps Google find you/ + page rank Change your public profile to full view Complete profile = visibility! You will appear in more searches Keyword load – don’t be overt.
Something to think about… Customized, keyword relevant resumes are critical to your success LinkedIn only gives you ONE resume.
How Recruiters Use LinkedIn MAKE IT EASY TO BE FOUND! Keyword search of qualifications You want to be at the top of any search results list: By # of connections By # of recommendations By keyword relevance Own as many of these as possible
Connecting with People on LI Connections = Visibility!  More connections mean you will appear in more searches Do not use the standard connect email! Remind them how you know each other End with contact info in case they want to connect outside of LI Reference your Home Base Toplinked.com  – connect with 1 or 2 and your network will explode!
Generating Clicks/Traffic LI - Write recommendations  LI - ASK for recommendations More recommendations means your will show up in more searches Posting relevant status updates  great way to keep you “Top of Mind” Comment on blogs TINKER with your content
Facebook Today – 1/5 of ALL net users on Facebook – practically a 2 nd  internet! Online interactions more PERSONAL WWGD? Social Search – looks inside facebook, etc Real Time Search – real time
Twitter Great way to build cred Link to articles you are reading Re-tweet! Search.twitter.com for topics  Follow relevant people Build groups!
