Schadow1 Expeditions is an advocacy resource for mapping and travel in the Philippines, using OpenStreetMap for crowdsourcing mapping data since 2011. The initiative aids in disaster response by extracting real-time data from OSM to assist humanitarian efforts during extreme weather events. This process allows responders to navigate affected areas effectively using GPS devices, leveraging satellite imagery for planning and relief operations.

What is Schadow1 Expeditions • A travel and mapping advocacy resource for the Philippines • Started in 2012 to document experiences in the Philippines while mapping communities, trails, and areas of interest. • Mapping advocacy started back in 2005 and contributing mapping data to Google Maps, Roadguide Philippines, OpenStreetMap, Waze

What is Schadow1 Expeditions • In 2011, we have chosen OpenStreetMap as the choice for contributing our mapping data for being open sourced, crowdsourced and free. • In 2009, OSM data has been extracted and converted to Garmin offline maps. • In 2013, Schadow1 Expeditions has taken the task and improved the extraction, conversion and compilation. • OSM-based Garmin map of the Philippines released in a weekly-basis.

- 5. • Over 1000 contributors nationwide • About 30 regular contributors nationwide • Contributors came from various professions with a goal of helping his countrymen through mapping data. • With these contributors, Philippine data has tremendously increased over a span of a few years.

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team • Organizes and calls out humanitarian activation of worldwide OpenStreetMap contributors during extreme weather events. • Request needed coverage for fresh satellite imagery for map tracing • Through HOT Tasks, OSM contributors can preemptively focus mapping specific locations using a tasking manager.

Schadow1 Expeditions • Extract OSM data on a daily basis to catch up with the mapping updates from the HOT activation during extreme weather events of the Philippines. • Responders can download the file and upload to their Garmin devices • Can be used offline to help responders navigate accordingly through land.

- 19. Planning • Humanitarian planners use satellite imagery of a community badly hit by the disaster. • They pinpoint roads that may be passable or not. And those passable can be reached via land while those communities cut off with impassable roads will be the subject for air dropping of relief. • The coordinates of the blockades and areas of concern are then taken then uploaded to a GPS device.
- 21. Operations • The GPS device with uploaded information are then given to relief mobilizers. Those that are passable through land can use the GPS to guide them to passable roads so they can reach their relief operations target. • The same GPS device with uploaded information are then given to relief mobilizers on air. Relief goods are then dropped off from the air exactly where the mission planners have indicated it on the GPS

During Humanitarian Activations • Humanitarian Activations are activated through HOT. • When the activation is in the Philippines, mapping contributors are directed to update specific locations that can be hit by disaster. • Schadow1 Expeditions releases daily updates of the GPS map to reflect map changes from the activation.
