This thesis examines best practices for mobile applications created by land-grant universities through a mixed-methods analysis. The author conducted a content analysis of 30 university mobile apps to assess use of 49 best practice variables across five user experience design categories. Based on quantitative scores, the top apps were from the University of New Hampshire, University of Arizona, Ohio State University, University of Florida, Washington State University, and Michigan State University. A qualitative analysis of these exemplary apps found it is difficult for one app to comply with all best practices across categories, but the top apps interacted categories to create successful user experiences. The study provides guidelines for universities to build more effective mobile strategies and applications.
