Value Added Reflection Activity
Using the school’s valued added report for your grade level and subject area, determine your strengths (green), areas for improvement (yellow), and areas for reconstruction (red) by analyzing the patterns of performance of students taught last year as a whole. To do this, click on the underlined school effect for the 3 year average in math, the 2009 underlined school effect for reading, and the 2009 school effect underlined number for science on the school value added page.
Guiding questions:
1. Are your blue bars in each quintile higher than your yellow bars? If so, which quintiles? If not, which quintiles? (Each blue bar being higher shows last year’s students made more progress than the previous cohort of students. In math, a cohort is 3 previous years and in reading a cohort is only one previous year.)
2. Within what range does each of your blue bars fall? (>0.5 = above avg. progess; -0.5 to 0.5 = not detectably different progress; <-0.5 = below avg. progress)
3. Based on this information, what were your grade/subject area’s strengths? Why? What practices/strategies did you employ that created these strengths?
4. Based on this information, what were your grade/subject area’s weaknesses? Why? What might you need to change in order to improve this area this year?
