Veganism Definition
• Definition: Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible
and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food,
clothing or any other purpose. This definition was taken off the vegan society
• Summary: The vegan website defines veganism very well as it looks into its early
early beginnings and how veganism was defined in the 1940’s and how it has been
slightly tweaked overtime as to what it means and what the diet includes.
The vegan society summarizes the diet very well and
explains that you can still eat food such as cake and
pizzas if they’re made with plant based ingredients.
This article also explains that compassion is a key
reason in choosing a vegan lifestyle and that it is not
just about the diet as animal products are now found
in lots of things such as clothing and bathroom items
but fortunately there are affordable and easily
sourced alternatives. The vegan society also talks
abut other aspects of a vegan lifestyle including
medical charities, medicine and entertainment and
explains each topic in thorough detail.
Veganism Definition
• Validation Of Sources: I very much trust this website as I know it is one of the most
well known vegan organizations. Also the fact that this page isn’t editable assures
that this information that I have collected isn’t false. Another reason to believe this
article is that the information is linked t other websites which further backs up
what’s been written.
• Further Research: to further my research I will look at different definitions and
different takings on how veganism works from other websites and articles.

Why go vegan?
• There are many reasons why people go vegan. In terms of why it largely depends
on life experiences, interests, outlook on the world and the timing of when certain
issues are brought to their attention. A first reason why people go vegan is to do
with health and nutrition and because they read of the so called long term health
benefits and it prevents artery clogging among other things. The negative impacts
of animal agriculture is another reason why people turn to being vegan.
Environmental protection is another factor as the fact industrialized animal
farming is a huge factor that is contributing to environmental degradation and the
facts are so compelling that anyone seeking to live a more sustainable or eco-
friendly lifestyle cannot help but question the impact of their food choices on the
environment. Morality is another reason why people come vegans as anyone who
cares for animals in any way will probably question whether there is a difference
between the animals they care for and protect and those that we bread and kill for
food. This also leads to social justice as anyone who is opposed to injustice in the
world, should pause and think about the fact that we breed and kill billions of
animals on an annual basis.
Why go vegan?
• Summary: I found this information off
http://www.onegreenplanet.org/lifestyle/the-5-reasons-people-go-vegan/ which
for me looks a trusted site as it is always advertising its own app called food
monster. It goes into thorough detail about 5 different reasons why people might
go vegan. It also provides links within the paragraphs.
Environmental Impact
It has been suggested by us scientists that eating fruit and vegetables could actually be worse for
the environment than eating meat products. One of the researchers suggested that ‘eating lettuce
is over three times worse in greenhouse gas emissions than eating bacon’. In general however
research tell us that animal products is so bad for the environment. The Vegan Society explains
that the production of meat and other animal products places a heavy burden on the
environment, from crops and water required to feed the animals, to the transport and other
processes involved from farm to fork. For example, In Brazil the equivalent of 5.6 million acres of
land is used to grow soya beans for animals in Europe. his contributes to developing world
malnutrition. Deforestation is also caused by animal products because of the amount of grain seed
that is required. On the flip side to this, lower quantities of crops and water are needed to sustain
a vegan diet.

Environmental Impact
• Summary: I looked at two very different articles, with one suggesting that
vegetarian diets may actually be worse for the environment. I found this article at
sciencealert.com and talks in thorough detail about this topic. It references its
information to a study found in the US and that researchers at the Carnegie Mellon
University suggested this theory. They go through 3 different scenarios to try and
prove their theory. On the other hand the second article I looked at which talks
about how meat and other animal products have a negative effect on the
environment are a lot more convincing in their writing. This is because their
information is based on facts. They also provide links for more information on ‘why
meat and dairy are so bad for the environment’
Environmental Impact
• Validation Of Sources: Out of the two sources I looked I very much trust one but
don’t trust the other one at all. I know for a fact that the Vegan Society is a trusted
organization and is an official website. On the other hand , the article about why a
vegetarian diet is worse for the environment it was written on a cheap website in
blog style. This to me sounds like it could potentially be false information.
• Further Research: I would further this research by looking at and reading through a
couple more websites and articles about the impact vegan diets have on the
environment.
Health
Is the vegan diet healthy? Research
shows that it is high in vitamin C and
fibre but just like any other diet it
depends on what you eat. Technically
just eating ready salted crisps is
following a vegan lifestyle but that is
not healthy at all. Research also shows
that the vegan diet is lower in
unsaturated fat than one containing a
meat product. Recent statistics also
show that people who are on a vegan
diet are thinner than ones that are not.
Although it sounds great that a vegan
diet contains more fruit, vegetables and
nuts than a non vegan diet, in terms of
micronutrients a vegan diet is actually
more susceptible to being nutritionally
poor. There is less calcium, vitamin d
and iron in this diet. This information
was taken from Jamie Oliver’s website.

Health
• Summary: I like this article because first of all it is written by a trusted author as she is a
registered nutritionist so you now for a fact you now what she’s talking about. This
article references other sources to back up their points and talks in great detail about
the diet and what foods to eat make sure that it boosts you’re health. She also talks
about micronutrients thoroughly and the positives and negatives about them. She also
links videos about different food products that you could potentially eat including the
vegan burger. However she also says that being a vegan does not necessarily mean that
you are going to be healthier. She then uses facts to prove this and also her opinion on
the matter. She uses specific examples to explain her points such as saying how vegan
deserts have the opportunity to be a lot healthier than conventional baking because
bakers have to come up with inventive ways of substituting out the better and cream.
She also talks about her preferred choice to give the reader more ideas and thoughts.
• Validation Of Sources: I trust this source because it is taken from one of the most well
respected chef’s in England in Jamie Oliver. This says to me that he will only employ
genuinely top writers who know exactly what there talking about.
• Further Research: to add to this I would contrast and compare with a few different
websites.
Health
Summary: This information has been taken from the Vegan Society and is 100% fact
based. This is proven with the link for the scientifically proven benefits and how it
compares with the average western diet. It also talks about what a plant based diet
includes in terms of nutrients and how vegan diets mitigate some of the worlds
biggest health issues like obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Validation of sources: This source is trustworthy as it is one of the most recognized
vegans institutions out there.
Further Research: For research in the future I will compare with other websites
talking about health with the vegan diet.
Diet Overview
The vegan diet mainly consists of nuts, seeds, grains, bean, fruit and vegetables.
Veganism is an extremely strict diet where they don’t allow themselves to go near
meat, fish, eggs and any dairy product. Despite their limits, vegans should get enough
protein, calcium, iron, vitamin b12 and omega-3 fatty acids. Despite the fact protein is
rich in banned foods such as meat and eggs, they manage to get their requirement
through vegan foods such as soybeans, lentils and almonds. Their calcium needs are
met through foods such as broccoli and spinach while iron which is a essential mineral
necessary for red blood cells and the transportation of oxygen in our body is also
digested with dried fruits and enriched cereals. Vitamin b12 is a water soluble vitamin
essential for the production of red blood cells. This vitamin is pretty much only found
in animal products so therefore they must eat foods which include nutritional yeast
and fortified cereals. Finally Omega-3 fatty acids which are needed for brain and heart
health can be found in walnuts and flaxseeds.
http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/list-foods-vegans-eat-3763.html
Diet
Summary: NHS choices talk about their idea of a
healthy diet by listing 5 or 6 different factors and
also provide a link to the eat well guide for a more
detailed explanation about a healthy diet. They
also talk about what nutrients would work out the
best for a vegan diet and problems and solutions
about being pregnant and breastfeeding for a
vegan. The NHS also list different food products
and sources for different nutrients. They suggest
different foods for calcium and vitamin d, iron,
vitamin b12 and omega 3 fatty acids.
Validation Of Sources: This is one of the best
sources that you could find in my opinion
because the whole of the uk rely on the NHS for
information about health. This guarantees that
this data won’t be unfounded.
DietSummary: BBC Good Food go through
shopping tips and recommendations
for what to have for each meal of the
day. They also reference a guideline for
daily amounts you should have of each
nutrition. They suggest that you should
have a breakfast that is high in fibre
and vitamins C and D. Good Food
recommend that you should have a mid
morning snack such as a cherry soya
yoghurt. In terms of lunch they suggest
that you should pack it with a
combination of carb rich foods for
energy and satisfying protein from
foods such as nuts, seeds, beans and
pulses. A mid afternoon snack should
also be consumed such as an apricot
and seed bar. Finally there's tea where
they recommend foods such as lentil
lasagne and ratatouille.
Diet
• Validation Of Sources: This entire source was taken from BBC’s Good Food website
and because BBC have some of the best sources it is incredibly likely to be correct
information.
• Further Research: Look at another vegan diet and see how the foods compare and
contrast.
Changing To Vegan
Summary: The vegan society
dedicate an article on the process
of changing to vegan. They talk
about the fact that you need to
take it slow and that you need to
keep you’re end goal in mind but
go at your own pace. They also
link food recommendations for
budget foods and a general
recipe link. They also advise you
to try new things, keep learning
but also ask for help when
required.
Validation Of Sources: The Vegan
Society is a top veganuary site
which is heavily reliable
https://www.vegansociety.com/go-
vegan/how-go-vegan
Changing To Vegan
• Summary: I love vegan is a website which
also dedicates a page to transitioning to a
vegan lifestyle. This page goes into
thorough detail about various factors and
steps of becoming vegan, including to
learn as much as you can, to add to your
diet before you subtract from it and find
and remember your motivation to
change. They also talk in depth about
barrier foods and recommend to leave
this until the end of your transition.
• Validation Of Sources: This is another
very reliable source within the vegan
community. Because of the constant
referencing makes me believe that this
information is correct as well as the fact
that the information is very similar to the
vegan society.
• Further Research: I wouldn’t do anymore
because I have already got two articles on
this matter.
