Verbs
By Stephanie Dodson
What is a verb?
A verb is an action word.
It indicates that something we do (or
did, or will do, etc.)
Which of these are verbs?
Circle any verbs that you see.
Verb Conjugation
In Spanish, we conjugate verbs
according to the subject (who/what
is doing the action).
The unconjugated (unchanged) form
is called the infinitive.
Infinitives
English Spanish

To be Ser
To have Tener

***Infinitives in Spanish always end in –ar, er, or –ir.***
Conjugating Infinitives
We use infinitives as the “name” of a
verb, or when talking about that
verb.
When we want to express that
someone is doing an action, we
must conjugate the verb.

Verb Charts
Verb Charts
We will use our verb charts to record verbs
that we learn.
Your verb chart will be an important
reference tool for the rest of the school
year.

Infinitive Meaning
First, we record the infinitive (name
of verb) and meaning (English
definition.
Verb Charts
Next, we write our conjugations in
the corresponding column for
each subject pronoun.
Verb Charts
Conjugating verbs tells us who is
doing the action.

Notice that the same verb forms are
always shared by él/ella/usted
(he/she/you formal) and by
ellos/ellas/ustedes (they/you all)
Ser “to be”
Tener “to have”
Regular & Irregular verbs
Some verbs such as ser and tener are irregular.
This means they don’t follow any rules. We just
have have to memorize the conjugations.
Other verbs are regular. This means they follow
rules for conjugation.
Once we know the rules for a type of regular
verb, we can conjugate any regular verb of that
type.
Regular –AR Verbs
The first verb type we will learn is regular –
AR verbs.
The infinitive always ends in –AR.
Examples include:
Hablar (to talk), Cantar (to sing),
Bailar (to dance), Dibujar (to draw),
Descansar (to rest), Trabajar (to work)
Regular –AR Verbs
Let’s start by writing the conjugation
rules for –AR verbs on an index
card.
You can keep this in your folder as a
handy reference.
-AR Verbs
Yo:
Tú:
Él/ella/Usted:
Ellos/Ellas Ustedes:
Nosotros:
Vosotros:
AR  O
AR  AS
AR  A
AR  AN
AR  AMOS
AR  ÁIS
Note that the verb endings are
replacements, not additions.
Ex. Yo bailaro  Yo bailo
Hablar (“to talk”)
Add hablar to your verb chart and highlight the
endings
Write *-AR to the left of the row and highlight it.
This will serve as your example of a regular –
AR verb.
