What is XR?
Reality
Augmented Reality
- Overlays information on
the real world
- No spatial awareness
Mixed Reality
- Mixes digital content
with the real world
- Reacts and responds to
your space
Virtual Reality
- Entirely new world
- Occludes your vision
The Real World
Computer Generated World

When something is:
• Needs to be seen in 3
dimensions
• Needs to be seen in situ
• Needs rich or distant interaction
• Needs perspective
• Needs spatial context
• Needs immersion
• Too dangerous
• Too small or too large
• Too precious
• Too complex
• Inaccessible,
• Too hard or expensive to get
to
When is VR Needed?
Immersion Interactivity

“I love helping people with anxiety or fears because
they can improve quickly…. Virtual reality [delivers]
faster, more effective treatment using realistic
simulations of stressful situations. I offer virtual
reality therapy as part of treatment for: fear of
flying, fear of heights, fear of driving, needle
phobia (fear of needles, injections, donating blood,
or medical procedures), fear of public speaking, job
interview anxiety, fear of enclosed spaces, elevators
or public transit, and fear of spiders or
cockroaches….” VR: Should it become best practice for Exposure?

• Uniquely suited for accepted, effective
exposure, immersive, evocative, ”real”
• Intensity & pace of exposure are controlled
and tailored to client needs while you guide,
support and mentor
• Aspects of the feared situation can be
manipulated in ways impossible in real life
while protecting confidentiality

Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, Extended Reality – what you
need to know why you need to know it! – update from last year
Carl Grant, Dean (Interim) of Libraries
Charleston Conferences, October 2019
What will you do at the intellectual
crossroads of the University of Oklahoma?
• Librarianship, broadly considered:
• Librarians / Resources (facilities,
materials, expertise)
• We support the creation, access,
interaction, distribution, and archiving of
information and knowledge, in all
formats.
• 3D is just another format!
• VR/AR/MR/3D printing are just new tools
for interacting with 3D objects.
Why the Library?
Vision / Mission

academic-libraries-in-supporting-3d-vr-for-research-and-teaching/
“Because 3D and VR/AR are such
cross-disciplinary practices, academic
libraries may be the ideal place to
facilitate communication around
their critical and creative use.”Page 9.
“Libraries are promoting democratized
access to 3D assets as a means of
providing new forms of knowledge
to the scholarly community.”Page 24.
Vision / Mission
What will you do at the intellectual
crossroads of the University of Oklahoma?
• Intellectual Crossroads of the University
/ campus hub / heart / center:
• No cost limitations for smaller
departments.
• No agendas, we’re the “Switzerland” of a
campus
• Facilitate collaborations and
interdisciplinary work

“Developing these new skills and
collaborations around emerging technologies
such as 3D/VR can potentially enhance
the profile and maintain the relevance of
the academic library both as the
custodian and curator of all forms of
research and educational data, and as a
catalyst for innovation in scholarship and
pedagogy at the heart of the twenty-first-
century university.”Page 9.

Provides access to:
• Hard to reach or see content
• Fragile, destroyed, distant,
microscopic, protected,
sociologically relevant, etc.
• First-hand, unmediated learning
experiences with challenging
objects

● Uses open source tools
● For library and museum
exhibitions; recognizes objects,
provides additional information.
● First planned use: a
forthcoming birds exhibition,
where 3D images of birds can
be expanded, rotated,
examined & bird-songs played
for that particular bird.
