Sandy Gutner presented on emerging solid waste technologies for Broward County. Broward County is responsible for solid waste management under Florida law. Currently, the county landfills 51% of its waste and combusts 25% while diverting 24%. New technologies could help the aging system and address the lack of appropriate disposal sites. Conversion technologies can turn waste into useful products like fuels while reducing pollution. Examples included pyrolysis, gasification, digestion and hydrolysis. Emerging technologies are not yet commercially viable for all waste but show promise if certain evaluation criteria are met.
