- 1. Vortex GT and Vortex Tri-Power BACKGROUND PROBLEM AIO SOLUTION In the mid 1990’s technology began surfacing that could harness wind current and generate electrical power on a large scale. Now, industry leaders, with an increasing focus on alternative energy need to deliver power in a cost effective manner from the generator down the tower. Application Notes Large lugs were initially being used but were found costly in the long run when compared to an electrical connector. Electricians had to be present for all installation and service. Standard circular connectors would allow manufacturers to get around the hardwire situation of lugs. However, circular connectors can be limited in their ability to carry high power from source to load. Therefore, a quick disconnect connector that could carry large load and withstand high vibration was desired. Amphenol Industrial Vortex series of connectors were the solution. This series would offer the quick disconnect of a reverse bayonet style mating connector with the increase in amperage through the use of Radsok contacts. The Vortex GT, containing a single 18mm Radsok contact, rated at 800A and Vortex Tri-Power containing 3 size 10.3mm Radsok contacts rated at 250A each. Amphenol is working to complete a Vortex GT with a single 14mm RADSOK contact rated at 600A. These connectors have eliminated the need to have certified electricians present when electrical components are disconnected for service.
