Properties of Matter
(Harmful or Useful
Materials)
Day 1
1. Why is metal commonly used as the main material
for making cooking pots?
What would occur if cooking pots were constructed
from wood, plastic, or paper?
Two classifications of properties of materials
1. Physical Properties
2. Chemical Properties
1. Physical Properties
Refer to the characteristics of matter that can be
observed or measured without changing its
composition.
W1 Science.pptx harmful and useful materials
W1 Science.pptx harmful and useful materials
W1 Science.pptx harmful and useful materials
2. Chemical Properties
Refer to the internal composition of matter that can be measured and observed when
matter undergoes change to become an entirely different substance.
*Combustibility refers to the ability of a material to catch fire and
burn when exposed to heat or an open flame.
*Toxicity
Refers to the degree to which a substance can cause harm, illness, or
adverse effects when it comes into contact with living organisms.
*Flammability
Materials have a lower ignition point and catch fire more easily
Categorize the given properties as either physical or
chemical. Record your responses in your notebook.
1. Hardness
2. Combustibility
3. Elasticity
4. Toxicity
5. Malleability
Identify the Property of the following materials.
Suppose you were
creating a toy; which
material would you select
to ensure its safety during
playtime?

Read each item carefully and choose the letter of the answer. Write the letter only. Write your answers on your
notebook.
1. What property does gold possess that allows it to be shaped into rings?
a. Hardness
b. Elasticity
c. Strength

2. Why can rubber bands be used to tightly secure things and return to their original shape after stretching?
a. Hardness
b. Elasticity
c. Strength
d. Brittleness
3.When wood is turned into chopping boards, which property of wood is utilized?

5.What makes metals highly valuable and practical?
a. They can be broken easily.
b. They can be thrown easily.
c. They can produce good sound.
d. They are hard and can be shaped differently.

Materials)
Day 2
Review
Using the given object, write as many characteristics
or properties as possible to describe each object.
Matter is all around us. It can take many forms and
has many properties. While some materials have
useful properties, other materials can also be harmful.
Get Three Things Inside Your Bag and Identify each item and
describe it.
1.
2.
3.
Are these materials useful or harmful? Why?
Provide at least one object that matches the specified property
of the material.
1. elasticity-
2. malleability
3. combustibility
4. hardness
5. conductivity

Day 3
What is the significance of studying the
characteristics/properties of matter?
Have you ever seen this symbol?
Halal - product is certified as safe for consumption
(for Muslims)
Look at the Chart
Directions: Draw a happy face if the
material is useful and sad face if it is not.
1.candy wrappers made into

Flammability
Identify whether the household material is useful or harmful, then determine the
product label that would help you identify its category.
Household Material Useful Harmful Product Label
(Corrosive, Poisonous,
Biodegradable, flammable, recyclable)
1. Muriatic Acid / Corrosive/Poisonous
2. LPG
3. Paper Cups
4. Empty Plastic
Bottles
5. Insecticides
Properties of Matter (Harmful or Useful
Materials)
Day 4
Look at the picture.
Useful or Harmful?
Explain your answer.
Write True if the statement is correct,
and write False if it is not.
1. Consumers must read product labels
when buying grocery items.
2. Place fertilizers in containers and label
them as edible.
3. Throw away anywhere the plastic
bottles after using them.
4. Labels are not important in classifying
materials as to useful or harmful.
5. Food allergen warnings are helpful
especially for those who have allergies
Various material possessed a useful and harmful
compositions.
Materials are said to be useful when they serve their
purpose. These may have properties such as durability,
flexibility, elasticity, hardness, and resistance to water,
heat, or acid. Most of the useful materials can be reused
and recycled. For example, a container for solid or
liquid, when it is already empty, can still be used for
other purposes such as a flower vase, a coin bank, or a
house decor.
Various materials can be located within our
residences. These objects possessing distinct
properties. Thus, it is imperative for consumers to
peruse product descriptions. By examining these
labels, consumers can ascertain the potential
harm associated with the product. Among the
pivotal components of a product label, expiration
dates and indicators of perilousness stand out.
Complete the paragraph using the words listed below;
purpose painful
recycled useful
harmful hazardouz
Many materials and substances are _________at home and in
school, but they can be ______ if not used properly. Materials
are considered useful when they serve their _____. Some
useful materials can be______, for example an empty container
can be used as a house decor. But some materials can be
____________ like a broken glass jar that can cause cuts or
injury.
