THE
WATER CYCLE
The water cycle is the
movement of water on Earth
and in the atmosphere
between different states.
ICE WATER VAPOR
Solid Liquid Gas
STATES OF WATER
1.
THE FOUR MAJOR STEPS
2. 3. 4.
Condensation Precipitation Collection Evaporation
CONDENSATION
PRECIPITATION
Condensation occurs when
water changes from a gas back
into a liquid. The liquid collects
in the clouds.
Precipitation occurs when water
falls back to earth. This can
happen in the form of rain, hail,
sleet and snow.
CONDE
NSATIO
N
When the warm water vapor
rises into the sky, it cools
down and turns back into
tiny water droplets. These
water droplets stick
together and form clouds.
PRECIPIT
ATION
When the clouds become
too heavy with water
droplets, they fall back to
the ground as rain, snow,
sleet, or hail.
PRECIPIT
ATION
Raindrops make the grass
and flowers grow, and
snowflakes create a
beautiful winter
wonderland.
COLLECTION
EVAPORATION
Collection occurs when the
precipitation collects in oceans,
lakes, rivers and streams. it often
soaks into the ground and is
stored as ground water.
Evaporation occurs when water
is heated by the sun, changing
it from a liquid to a gas that is
known as water vapor.
COLLECT
ION
When rain falls to the
ground, it collects in lakes,
rivers, and oceans. Some of
the water soaks into the
ground and becomes
groundwater.
EVAPOR
ATION
When the sun shines on
water, it makes the water
warm and turn into vapor or
steam. The water goes up
into the sky as an invisible
gas.
RUN-
OFF
When there is too much
water on the ground, it
flows downhill and creates
streams and rivers. The
water eventually returns to
the oceans and starts the
cycle again.
Condensation
Precipitation
Collection
Evaporation
WHY DOES IT
MATTER?
The water cycle is important
because it moves nutrients
around and provides plants,
animals and humans with
water.
