This document summarizes a new policy by Leon County EMS regarding securing weapons. The policy, effective December 2016, defines a weapon and provides guidelines for EMS personnel. If a weapon is present and could impact care or pose a threat, personnel can inquire about it. For conscious patients, personnel should ask them or family to secure the weapon safely or call law enforcement. For impaired patients, law enforcement or family should secure the weapon. Weapons discovered during transport should be secured in an ambulance locker, notifying the receiving facility. Personnel should avoid using force and contact law enforcement if any scene becomes unsafe. The full policy should be read and an assessment completed.
