Social activity
Cyberlearning is a means of using technology to take the
learning experience well beyond the classroom
utilizing a wealth of online resources and the social
aspect of connecting with others from around the globe
Cyberlearning is important not only because it allows
students to create, share, and collaborate with the
global community, but also because careers in the 21st
century will require a mastery of the same type of Web
2.0 tools with which cyberlearning takes place
Google Docs is an incredibly useful resource for students when composing
documents, that allows real-time sharing with the teacher or even
collaborating with other students throughout the entire writing process
Students benefit by using Google Docs for the most common types of high
school social studies assignments: essays, reports, research papers.
Teachers benefit because Google Docs “sharing” facilitates real-time
progress monitoring and even time-stamps students progress.
For a History group project that requires a report on Native American Tribes
interaction with European colonists : Students create a Google Doc so that
they can all work on writing the report at the same time, see each others
additions, simultaneously peer-edit and even chat in the same place.
Prezi is a multimedia presentation
software that works best to
encourage students to showcase
their creativity on assignments
like presentations or visual aides
for speeches
Prezi focuses on presenting
information in a visually intuitive
way and allows for interactive
mapping of key concepts
In History class Students
would be required to
use Prezi to create a
presentation that shows
the population growth
of U.S. cities from 1800-
1900.
Socrative is a powerful Web 2.0 App
based on formative assesment and allows
for real-time quizzes, instant feedback,
result aggregation and graphic
representation of Student learning.
The Socrative App allows teachers to
easily create quizzes, questions to check
understanding and even has a function for
making exit-tickets.
At the end of a teacher-led
discussion on the role of the U.S. in
World War I, the Socrative app
could be used to create a 5 question
multiple choice quiz. After the
students completed the quiz the
Socrative app would immediately
display the results of the class as a
whole and the teacher could assess
understanding.
● Identifying plagiarism is probably the biggest challenge of cyber learning since it is
so easy for the students to copy and paste content.
● Ensuring that every student has adequate access to the necessary technology needed
for Web 2.0 tools, to like a computer, tablet or smartphone is a major challange
● Protecting Students Privacy, especially when using social media based learning
apps can be a major challenge of utilizing Web 2.0 tools.
● Tracking student participation and collaboration on Google docs could be very
time-consuming and not give much insight on student progress
● A big challenge will be finding the right amount of internet tools. Too many Web
2.0 used in class may become overwhelming for students who might become more
concerned with whether or not they know how to use the tool rather than the
reason for using it in the first place.
