The client, a leading provider of crude oil and natural gas price information, wanted to migrate from its legacy desktop reporting tool to a web-based system to provide users instant access to information. Sigma Infosolutions built a new reporting tool using Pentaho and BIRT that consolidated data from multiple sources and generated analytic reports. The new system provides role-based access to real-time data and complex reports in seconds, saving time and costs compared to the previous biannual system relying on distributed CDs.

- 2. One of the leading providers of information on crude oil and natural gas prices wanted to migrate from a legacy standalone desktop reporting tool to a web based system. They wanted to provide their users an instant access to information they need. Sigma Infosolutions leveraged its expertise in Business Intelligence to build this reporting tool. The system provides business users role-based access to the central knowledge- store. The system generates reports and analysis on index comparisons, multiple leases and their prices, pricing data required for annual Ad Valorem tax preparations, etc. Since its inception in 1988, the client has been a leading provider of information on crude oil and natural gas prices to customers ranging from industrial consumers, marketers, oil and gas operators, investors, litigation support, etc. Their proprietary databases comprise of natural gas Henry Hub Nymex prices, oil volumes, and natural gas volumes. Their current knowledge bank stands at 51,597,034 records including 641,144 leases. They also maintain a comprehensive library of crude oil bulletins for over 100 different crude oil purchasers dating back to January 1977. The ClientExecutive Summary The client combines multiple data sources like Texas RRC data, Texas Comptroller data, Nymex crude oil and natural gas futures, as well as crude oil purchaser WTI postings into one single repository system. To access this database the user needed to install a desktop client and the database on their local machine, which was provided by the client on a CD. The desktop client synched with the database and generated reports on the information the user needs. The users only got to update their databases twice a year. Therefore, this system was not giving real-time information to the users. Since, the analytical reports generated by the client's software was critical to contract negotiations, wellhead price confirmations, tax preparations, and regulatory filing confirmations, the client wanted a new system that could simplify their role based subscriptions to an all-time updated database. The client approached Sigma Infosolutions to advance from a standalone desktop reporting tool to a web based system built on Pentaho. The system will consolidate all crude oil and natural gas information from various sources and give business users instant access to the information they need. Since, the client never organized the database; Pentaho's reporting tool took 15-20 minutes to compile one report. Technology Sigma Infosolutions used the following technologies to build the solution: Pentaho 3.5 Reporting BIRT Business Benefits By leveraging Sigma Infosolutions' expertise on web based technologies and Pentaho, the client was able to develop a solution that: Gave 24X7 access to information for customers Reduced turnaround time for sign ups from few days to few seconds S a v e d o v e r h e a d s o n C D procurement, management, and distribution Solution A team of experts operated from Sigma Infosolutions' office in Bangalore and took four months to develop, integrate, and test the system. The Sigma Infosolutions' team closely worked with the business analysts at the client side. They comprehensively understood the system requirements and functionalities of the new system. Post this, Sigma Infosolutions migrated the database from Foxpro to My SQL and then started developing the reporting tool using Pentaho and BIRT. The new system now: Provides role-based access to business users Generates big and complex cross-tabbed reports in a few seconds Executes complex conditional column computations Extends the ability to export the report in MS Excel and PDF format Paginates the results of a report by page(s) Generate more than 13 reports including 4Ad Valorem reports Generates analytic reports which show index comparisons, wellhead comparisons of multiple leases and their prices, pricing data required for annualAd Valorem tax preparations, and much more a few seconds was challenging. Adding to this, Pentaho's reporting tool was publishing the entire report on one web page instead of splitting it in multiple pages. However, the new version of reporting tool paginated the report, but presented a second challenge: to do away with query execution each time the user navigates to the next or the previous result of a report. Pentaho's pagination functionality was not serving the client's business need. This required exceptional insight from Sigma Infosolutions into the convergence of various DB engines which can paginate results of a report in a variety of ways, with the existing Pentaho reporting tool. www.sigmainfo.net
