Speaker: Allen S. Anderson, MD, FACC, FAHA
Heart failure describes a range of conditions that can, if untreated,
lead to very serious health problems, but over the past 25 years,
medical treatment for heart failure has led to remarkable treatment
advances and improved outcomes. Allen S.Anderson, MD,
FACC, FAHA, medical director of the Advanced Heart Failure
program and director of Network Development at the Bluhm
Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern University, will discuss
what heart failure is, how cardiologists and cardiac surgeons are
working together using advanced treatment options to help patients
who are experiencing heart failure.

Bariatric Surgery - Achieving Weight Loss and
Improving Health
Thursday, June 20; 4-5 p.m.
Speaker: Jeffrey S. Fronza, MD
Jeffrey S. Fronza, MD, is a fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon
practicing at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and clinical
instructor of Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School
of Medicine. His discussion of bariatric surgery will focus not
only on its effectiveness in achieving permanent weight loss, but
also on its ability to improve or cure medical conditions such as
diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea and osteoarthritis.
Healthy Nutrition Trends
Wednesday, June 26; 11 a.m. to noon
Speaker: Erin McCarthy, MS, RD, CSSD
Questions about healthy nutrition arise all the time—is sugar
harmful to your health? Does a gluten-free diet make a difference?
Are plant-based diets good for everyone? What does GMO-free
really mean? Erin McCarthy, MS, RD, CSSD, registered dietitian
and sports dietitian with Northwestern, will lead a discussion about
healthy eating and what good nutrition means for health-conscious
people today.
Skin Cancer, Sun Protection and Atypical and
Benign Skin Growths
Monday, July 15; 4-5 p.m.
Speaker: Mary C. Martini, MD
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United
States, with over 2 million people diagnosed annually. Mary
Martini, MD, associate professor of Dermatology and director
of the Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Clinic at Northwestern
University Feinberg School of Medicine, will discuss steps you
can take to help avoid skin cancer, and the difference between
benign and potentially malignant skin growths.
Natural Approaches to Heart Health
Wednesday, July 17; 4-5 p.m.
Speaker: Stephen R. Devries, MD
People have much more control over their heart health than is
commonly realized. Stephen R. Devries, MD, associate professor
of Cardiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of
Medicine, will discuss new advances that highlight the vital role
of nutrition and lifestyle measures for heart health. Scientific
evaluation of over the counter therapies and new laboratory tests
for metabolic risks will also be discussed.
Depression: How to Identify and Treat
Wednesday, July 24; 11 a.m. to noon
Speaker: Robert R. Edger, MD
Depression affects millions of Americans, affecting as many as
1 in 10 Americans, but despite its prevalence, it’s still important
to be able to effectively identify depression as a way of finding
the appropriate treatment of it. Robert R. Edger, MD, assistant
professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine discusses
depression and helps you know what signs to look for and how to
treat it.
Maintaining Mental Health During Menopause
Wednesday, August 14; 4-5 p.m.

With the changes that come during menopause, women find that their
emotional and mental health may also be impacted. Katherine L.
Wisner, MD, MS, Norman and Helen Asher Professor of Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences and Obstetrics and Gynecology Director,
Asher Center for the Study and Treatment of Depressive Disorders
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine—Department
of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, discusses ways women who
