- 2. Overview This presentation is designed to explain: • What the purpose of the website is and who it’s target audience is. • Explain what exactly a Makerspace is utilizing a universal definition. • Three different Makerspaces around the world and what kinds of hobbies each one focuses on.
- 3. What is a Makerspace? • The Cambridge dictionary describes a Makerspace as “a place where people can come together to create or invent things, either using traditional crafts or technology.” • This is exactly what a Makerspace is, it is a communal space where individuals can share ideas and utilize public machines to create whatever they come up with. • This includes but is not limited to wood construction, 3-D printing, CNC routing (wood, metal, plastic etc.) and much more. Next we will take a look at a few Makerspaces from around the world.

Danbury Innovation Center • Connected to the Danbury Library located in Danbury Connecticut, the Danbury Innovation Center is a space which was funded by the City of Danbury to help create a community of “makers” • Danbury innovation center features eleven different 3-D printers, a laser cutter, a CNC router and much more. • All these machines are able to be freely used by members of Danbury Innovation Center. • Fun Fact:The Palace of Danbury, a theatre and preforming arts venue is right across the street. Which means you could head to the makerspace and then head right over to a play right after!

Den Hac of Denver • Located in Denver Colorado, Den Hac is largely crowd funded by its large volunteer community and is also listed as a not for profit organization. • Den Hac has similar machines to Danbury InnovationCenter including 3-D printers, CNC Machines, a silicon and soldering station, lathe machine, and a mill. • Den Hac even has a student discount available for membership fees! • Check out the cool technology themed van in front of Den Hac’s space.
- 6. 57North Hackerspace • Found in Aberdeen, Scotland; 57North was created after only two in person meetings at the University ofAberdeen to get a space to move into. • Being a fairly new organization, founded in 2015 57North features more electronic and digital equipment focused more for network experiments as well as software hacking. • Fun Fact: 57North has a coded timer on its website which displays the time 57North has been around for!

Summary • In this presentation: • The definition of a Makerspace/Hackerspace and further explanation as to the specific purpose of a makerspace. • We also explored three different Makerspaces and examined where each one was located, what each one offered in terms of technology and machinery, as well as some individual fun facts about each one.
