The students at Hommocks Co-Op Camp have been engaged in a mapping project over the past two weeks where they picked a favorite place in their community, drew and photographed it, and are now using those resources to create cardboard maps of the area using materials like glue guns and scissors. The special needs classes have also been integrated into the project and are working on mapping the swamp behind the school. The students have shown themselves to be very self-reliant in developing their maps with minimal input needed from the teachers.

- 4. We have been working on the mapping project for a week now and the students are really engaged.
- 5. Students were asked to pick their favorite place in their community.
- 6. We then asked them to draw this place and photograph it on their own time.
- 7. Using their own sketches/notes/photograp hs as resources we put out cardboard, scissors, glue guns…
- 8. Our students used programs like Google Earth to obtain a topographic view of the place they choose
- 16. We are particularly pleased with how the special needs classes are being integrated. The class is familiar with the swamp behind the school and we are working on a unique collaboration complete with some of the animals and insects we might find in the area
- 19. • Our students appear very self-reliant. Other than sharing techniques (i.e. working with wire or glue-guns) we three have really been able to take a back seat and watch the development of the communities take place in each class.
