Editor's Notes

  • #3: Unequal difference and barriors that are contributing to differebncehttp://pewinternet.org/Reports/2011/Cell-Phones/Section-1/How-Americans-Use-Their-Cell-Phones.aspxAn interesting TWIST to the digital divide is arising – based on SOCIO-ECONOMIC factors. Those who participate and contribute to knowledge on the internet and those who only consume (read/view.)The difference lies in HOW we ACCESS information. In America it is the Black African and Latinos who have been identified with the HIGHEST use of Cellphones and Internet Access. However they have the LOWEST contribution to the internet content. The reason being that the CURRENT state of applications on Cellphones is not great for creating content on the internet.Hence there is now a SOCIO-ECONOMIC divide- impacting RACE – esp Black African and Latinos.Part two of our definition of Digital Divide, looks at the division within the groups who have access to technology and information technology. How they access the internet resources, and What they do with them differs.Listen to the NPR interview (or read the transcript) and try to answer the following questions – Why is it important for teachers to build the bridges? What technology is increasingly used?Who is being disenfranchised? What is media illiteracy? What can we do to overcome this problem?
  • #4: Di you kids have computer and internet connection in their classes / past schools?Review as a class / see opportunities for teachers on local, national and global levels. What would you use and why?Create a facebook page for promoting Educational / Grants – see who comments – Review over the course duration – link to other sites on facebook.
