The Plano Rotary Club held its annual Club Assembly meeting on January 16th. Members discussed the direction of the club and provided suggestions, including focusing on fewer large charitable projects, increasing social events and young professional membership, and reviving past projects. The meeting featured guest speakers discussing upcoming events and a report on the club's accomplishments from the past year. Members broke into small groups to discuss questions and provide feedback to club leadership.

But our innovative President Kirk had promised that this would be unlike any past effort, and he delivered. So it wasn’t a colonoscopy; it was more like a trip to the dentist. Kirk Belled us to order early at 12:10, sending shivers down the spines of his captive audience; it seemed to imply that he had 5 more minutes of Club Assembly than could be fitted into the normal hour. He called upon LB the Good for the Invocation and Jason Kramer for the Pledge. The Governorship has had a salutary effect upon Ean’s introductions; they now rarely involve him tasting his toes. It would have been otherwise had he introduced Cathy Tyler’s guest, Diane Korzenieuki; his tongue wouldn’t have worked for hours. She was born in Olney, TX, and attended UT. Her first job was with Williams High, but if she couldn’t teach, she’d rather be a tennis pro (to challenge Bobby Riggs?). She spent New Year’s Eve at a neighbor’s party, eating black-eyed peas and making a resolution “to avoid New Year’s resolutions.” Her favorite College Bowl is OKLAHOMA! And she’s 3 years a Rotarian, having been “encouraged by Doyle Dean.” She believes in PRC’s focus on students. continued on page 2

Kirk recognized Herb Hoxie and Lori Phantom Crotchetienne Roberts for their Birthdays then gave the floor to Dennis Luellen who encouraged us to donate to the Boys & Girls Club of Collin County that has “run over on kids and under on budget.” He mentioned the club’s fundraiser on January CHILI COOK-OFF to be judged by a 25th, a man who can stand the heat, Fire Chief Brian Crawford. Raconteur Larry Flash Flannery demanded Equal Time to tell a tale of a man who sought prayer for his hearing at a church service. The pastor covered the man’s ears with his hands and beseeched the Deity on his behalf to which the congregation echoed “Amen.” He then asked the parishioner to “Tell be about your hearing now,” to which the fellow replied, “Well it’s not until next Thursday.” Captain Kirk called Pam Little, Dave McWhorter, Lori Roberts, Larry Bisno, and Randy Wright to the podium for a pep talk on what the Club has accomplished. Randy explained that the format for the day involved discussions at individual tables about the direction of the Club. We were to appoint Table Captains, who, at 12:50, were to report our findings and espouse our suggestions within a two-minute window. An agenda and timeline were both on our table and on-screen. Pink sheets were to be completed by the Captains and left with Lynette. Service Chair Larry began by extolling the Club’s virtuous actions in • Heroes on the Water • 9-11 Dinner • Back to School supplies for Memorial Elementary • Habitat for Humanity • Hendrick Golf Tournament • Citizen of the Month • Battle of the Badges, and • Angel Tree He included a slide of proposed projects to include • Memorial Science Fair Judges • Four-Way Speech Contest • Memorial Elementary Mentors • February’s Peace Symposium • 5810’s trip to Nicaragua in March • A Rough Riders game in April with Memorial • PISD Elementary Student of the Year in May Club Historian Lori described plans to archive all Club records digitally and beseeched Past Presidents to bring forward documents to be scanned and preserved. She asked for volunteers to help with the scanning. Program Chair David said he was “impressed with the number of contacts who wish to speak” to Plano Rotary. He intends to rotate topics and speakers. He’s left March through May “free for suggestions.” Dave wants to see more fellow Rotarians presenting; he gave an example of Yoram Solomon as “an accomplished speaker” on a wide variety of topics. He told us that we will be “ejected from the hotel” on March 6th, and we’re trying to get Williams High as our venue for that date. Someone unassociated with PISD asked if we were to dine on cafeteria food, but President Kirk said we’d likely be served something edible from Jersey Mike’s. Pam Little (Membership Chair) spoke of 118 members (including 5 corporate members); we’ve inducted 7 and lost 8. She wants us to “brainstorm” how to attract young people to the Club with a wider variety of service projects. Randy gave us our marching orders, asking for particular attention to question #6 on the questionnaires at our tables. Also we’d be asked to respond either at the meeting or online; he said he was hoping for a 93% response rate. We were to talk among ourselves and come to consensus on recommendations for the Club. After sufficient time had passed for discussion, the Table Captain arose, one by one, to report our findings. Lori reported a suggestion for “one more big event, not golf.” She said that Table 11 recommended that we concentrate on fewer charities so that we could become “more effective with what’s left.” On a personal note, she wants to “bring back the Fish Fry.” Hubert Aaron, reporting from he knew not what table, that we should (1) develop Club goals, (2) respond to community needs, and (3) support Rotary International. Rick Kasmiskie seconded the notion that we should “not spread ourselves too thin” but schedule more socials.
- 3. Bev Kilmer recommended that we host a party to which we each invited a guest to be proselytized about Rotary and Plano Rotary in particular. She also advocated a better Facebook page and web site to interact with a user-friendly interface. She went on to propose a Chamber membership for the Club. The next table wanted to “break up tables” so that we’d meet someone new. He who shall remain nameless proposed a Groundhog Day Social complete with medical marijuana (cheaper than the recreational kind, apparently). Rick Horne began his litany when Ken Roberts chimed in “time’s up!” Rick advocated bringing more students to our meetings and to spread Citizen of the Month to more schools. He suggested sweat equity, which, he conceded, would imply younger member. LB the Radiant said, “We need more men at my table.” As if to illustrate that point, Lynn McLean took point to recommend that potential new members volunteer for Club projects before they join. Yoram recommended that we “buy Plano Metro Rotary Club.” He echoed the “young people” sentiment so widely suggested, and said that they would be more apt to join if they could find us on the new media. Jerry Kezhaya, pointing to the international efforts of the Club, recommended that the Club have a booth (I’m not sure we could afford the $15) at the PLANO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL. He also advocated increasing the corporate membership. Nathan Barbera advocated that we “have more fun,” proposing an alternative venue for the March 6th meeting: Total Wine. On a more serious note, he suggested that we work for “more cooperation with the other Plano clubs.” Instead of Inside the Rotarian Studio, he recommended bios in the Weekly Reader or Lynette’s enewsletter. Kelly Palmer suggested increasing the number of local projects. He also would like to see the Wheelchair Project revived. Finally, he proposed paying attention to the plight of homeless students who number 200 in Plano and 1,000 in Collin County. Randy made us swear to complete the questionnaire this afternoon or online. Then he told Table Captains to turn in their pink sheets and returned control of the meeting to Kirk who echoed the importance of completing the survey thoughtfully and promptly. Then he led us in the Four-Way Test, and belled us out at 1:02.
