Chandragupta Maurya forged the first great Indian empire in 321 BC with its capital at Pataliputra. He had a well-organized bureaucracy that built infrastructure to benefit trade. His most honored grandson, Asoka, converted to Buddhism, rejected violence, and sent missionaries to spread Buddhism across India and Sri Lanka. About 500 years later, the Gupta dynasty again united much of India and enjoyed a golden age under strong central government that promoted prosperity and education.
