How did we attract our audience? By Leo Faulks
Violence Our thriller is quite violent which is a way of attracting our audience. People are attracted to the idea of violence because it is taboo in western society. Violence appeals more to men than it does to women, partly because of men’s naturally more competitive and violent behaviour and since our main audience will be men this is a key factor. This is violence towards women which some men will get a sick pleasure out of and the film encourages men to enjoy it. Next slide for a screen grab demonstrating the violence…
This is an example of one of the violent scenes we have in the film, in this shot Edward’s character is smashing in Pip’s characters knee.
In this shot Adam’s character is shouting at Pip, demanding she gives over the location of an unknown male character. You could claim that this shot insights sexism as the male character is shouting at the female character and it may imply male dominance. Just a thought.
Another Screen grab… Another Screen grab for you to enjoy…this one is entitled ‘ping pong punch’, sorry about the quality, it is quite blurred.
Sex appeal The film contains a blonde girl in which male audience members will hopefully find attractive, male audience members will get a sick pleasure out of watching a young blonde girl getting tortured. She was chosen as blonde because blonde hair gives a feel of innocence and since she is being tortured our audience will yet again get a sick pleasure out of watching innocence being broken down.
Sex appeal Screen grab… This one is entitled ‘Pip running, Buff ting’. It is in the opening sequence of our film.
Conclusion In conclusion we attract our audience using the idea of sex appeal and violence. A chicken and the egg situation occurs when asking the question, did we put the violence and sex appeal in because we wanted to please our audience, or did we get the audience because we had these factors in. Like the chicken and the egg (the egg came first), there is an answer and I would say that we got the audience because we had these factors rather then we had the audience so we put in these factors in, which is just illogical.
