So what’s ?
• is a Wireless Radio Frequency Technology and it stands
for Long Range
• It uses unlicensed spectrum below 1GHz along with a form of direct
sequence spread spectrum modulation that provides signal detection
below the noise level.
• As a result, this technology is able to use extremely low transmit
power levels and can fulfil many of the requirements for long battery
life.
• built from the ground up for IoT

The LoRaWAN specification is a Low Power, Wide Area (LPWA) networking protocol designed to
wirelessly connect battery operated ‘things’ to the internet in regional, national or
global networks, and targets key Internet of Things (IoT) requirements such as bi-directional
communication, end-to-end security, mobility and localization services.
What is

Why LoRaWAN?
• It provides an open and complete standard for IoT Networks
• It has Flexibility in Network Deployment Models:
• Deploy your own private LoRaWAN networks or
• leverage existing public LoRaWAN networks
• Battery Life Optimization: optimized for a battery life of 15-plus years when
communicating once per day.
• Security: The LoRaWAN specification uses 128-bit Advanced encryption Standard
(AES) algorithms to provide end-to-end encryption for both public and Private
• Supported by both the community and tier-1 companies

Security
• LoRaWAN 1.x specifies a number of security keys: NwkSKey, AppSKey
and AppKey. All keys have a length of 128 bits.
• The Network Session Key (NwkSKey) is used for interaction between
the Node and the Network Server
• The Application Session Key (AppSKey) is used for encryption and
decryption of the payload. The payload is fully encrypted between
the Node and the Handler/Application Server component of The
Things Network (which you will be able to run on your own server).
• Dynamically activated devices (OTAA) use the Application Key
(AppKey) to derive the two session keys during the activation
procedure.

What’s the ?
• The LoRa Alliance is an open, non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting the interoperability and standardization of low-power
wide area network (LPWAN) technologies to drive implementation of
the Internet of Things (IoT). There are 500+ Members

• MCU/Chip-level support by ARM in embed OS

LoRaWAN remains one of the most popular connectivity methods in the Mbed
community, with 21% of users expecting to use it in an upcoming product. Since the initial
release of our LoRaWAN stack, we have seen tremendous market adoption and we're
expecting the first large-scale deployments using the stack in the first quarter of 2019. We
hope that adding LoRaWAN 1.1 support will strengthen this position and drive the whole
ecosystem forward.
Arm is heavily invested in advancing the LoRaWAN standard. We're an an active member of
the LoRa alliance, and we were the first company to demonstrate multicast firmware updates
over LoRaWAN. An IoT device is more than just an MCU and a radio. A complete IoT product
incorporates an RTOS, crypto libraries, an update client, a resilient file system, and more.
Having a common set of well-integrated middleware modules is vital for a secure and scalable
IoT solution.
