Why do you walk? Everyone’s reason may be different, but one thing
holds steadfast—taking a walk can be life-changing. For health. For
mental clarity. For happiness.
We asked 99 Walks Pack Members why they walk and they so graciously
shared their stories. Their truths. Their reasons. So, as you read through
these, take note of how walking has impacted each of their lives in
significant ways, and think what starting an intentional walking practice
can do for you. Then, we hope you’ll join us at 99 Walks in our mission to
get one million women walking their way to better.

I walk to cleanse my mind, body and
soul by connecting with everything
around me. The world is such a beautiful
place, if you take time to enjoy the
moment and the now. Just breathe, lace
up and go any time, any hour. Just walk
and enjoy.

I walk because I feel better when I walk
regularly. I was at a point in life when I
could not walk even a half mile without
severe pain in my hips, so it was never fun
to go anywhere or see new places. Even
after a couple of illnesses, I can still walk at
least a mile at a time, so visiting new places
and taking tours is fun and interesting.

For years, I have battled depression and anxiety. I was put on
medication after my first panic attack—I thought I was having
a heart attack. The medication was almost worse than the
anxiety. I have turned to walking as my therapy for many
years without knowing it. Even when my children were little, I
would strap them in the double jogger and off we would go,
often walking 5 miles twice a week. I now find that if I go
more than a week without walking, such as due to weather or
illness, I start feeling myself going to a dark place very quickly.
My mind, body and soul need my walks.

I started walking when my son, Gordon, died to help
me stay strong to keep up with his two children. I
continued walking through my daughter’s battle with
colon cancer and her death to stay strong for her two
daughters. Walking helps me stay in touch with
nature, myself, my friends, and my family. It gives me
time to think and process and cry and sing and keep
my sanity in this world.

In 2020, I had quit my gym membership and had
become very sedentary during the early pandemic. In
August, an ad for 99 Walks hit my social media feed
and I thought why not. I fell in love with intentional
walking! Walking makes me feel good physically and
mentally. Now, I typically walk between 75-100
intentional miles each month! I have rejoined the gym
for additional workouts, but intentional walking is
now just a regular part of my day!

I lost my leg above the knee at the age of
10 due to bone cancer. I’m 55 years old
now, and my mobility is something I can’t
take for granted. If I don’t value and fight
to maintain it, I will quickly lose it. So in a
nutshell, I walk so I can keep walking!

I walk for better health—a body in motion stays
in motion and it helps me stay active & strong. I
walk for a better mindset—fresh air and
outdoors in nature lift my mood. I walk for my
relationship—more intentional time with my
husband to decompress, chat about things, and
spend time together.
