Needs Assessment
1.       What is the learning problem?
     –      ESL Learners are faced with the problem in establishing Prepositions of Place to
            subject location relevant to object.
2.       What is currently available?
     –      Currently, there is no adequate exercise available to assist in understanding how
            prepositions are used, and what each stand for.
3.       What should be available?
     –      Training should be available to help learners in practice in both understanding and
            determining correct use of prepositions when faced with location of subject.
4.       Explain the gap analysis between what is available and what should be
         available.
     –      Although ESL Learners come with some exposure to prepositional usage, they are
            unable to give examples in statement that help to show their understanding.
5.       What is the recommended solution for filling the gap?
     –      The design of an interactive eLearning Training Module that will assist ESL Learners in
            practice of comprehending Prepositions of Place.
Instructional Goal
• What should the learner be able to do after
  successful completion this tutorial?
  – ESL Learners should be able to have a level of
    understanding more apparent than previously of
    Prepositions of Place, both in definition and in
    context to the relationship of the subject.
Performance Based Objectives (PBOs)
• Use the ABCD Model for creating objectives
   – Who is the Audience?
       • The audience is comprised of ESL Learners who have a lack of proficiency with
         Prepositions of Place
   – What is the expected Behavior?
       • After completion of the tutorial (and with successful passing rate of the Quiz),
         learners should be able to identify subject object relations with the use of the
         correct preposition.
   – What Conditions will the learning take place under?
       • The presentation will be delivered via an online format. Students will have the
         opportunity to navigate throughout the tutorial in order to familiarize
         themselves with the materials presented. At the end of the tutorial, a quiz will
         be presented to them to test their level of understanding in the subject area.
   – What is the Degree of accomplishment?
       • Students will need to receive an 80% accuracy or higher in scoring as a result
         of the Quiz in order to pass the eLearning tutorial.
Summative Assessment
                & Learning Outcomes
• As students navigate through the tutorial, they will be given an
  opportunity to test their level of understanding through practice and
  exercise when being presented on new information. This format of
  formative assessment will help to train them in preparation for the Quiz at
  the end. Students should be able to learn how the quiz is structured (as
  well as how to answer quiz questions) before finishing the eLearning
  tutorial. Sample Quiz questions will be modeled along the way.
• By the time the learner begins the actual graded quiz, these should be
  proficient enough to participate in the procedure with an ease of access.
• Should any concerns arise through the learning process, assistance will be
  available upon request.
• The results of the quiz will be used to measure learner attainment levels.
Introduction to Tutorial
• Prepositions of Place: Understanding Location
  – In this presentation, students should be able to:
      • Understand Prepositions of Location
      • Acknowledge relationship between subject and object
      • Identify the preposition in a statement.
      • Select correct examples of prepositions in usage through
        formative assessment
      • Make relation between situational examples and the proper
        preposition for usage
      • Complete summative interactive quiz to demonstrate 100%
        accuracy

UNDERSTANDING LOCATION
What is a Preposition?
• A Preposition links nouns,
  pronouns and phrases to                 object
  other words in a sentence.

• The word or phrase that the
  preposition introduces is
  called the object of the
  preposition.
                                Subject
Location, Location
• We use Prepositions in everyday
  occurrences to help in locating or
  identifying the subject in relation
  to the object.

• Here, we see the man is on the
  box. Therefor, the preposition we
  use to identify the location of the
  subject is on.
An Example in Use
•   If we were to use the preposition in a
    statement, we would do so by stating
    that:
          “The man is on the box”.

•   Note: In making a true statement,
    we must remember to use the
    subject-verb agreement first,
    followed by the preposition, before
    describing the rest.

Formula:
Subject+ Verb + Preposition + the rest.
Another Example in Use
• Here is another example. In this
  picture, we see that the man has
  moved. He is now located beside
  the box.

• Therefor, the preposition we
  would use to describe the subject
  in relation to his location of the
  object is beside.

• Our statement would read:

       The man is beside the box.

•   In Practice Question 3, we noted that
    the context had changed in the
    question, slightly increasing the level   The box is behind the man.

    object being referred to.

    and not the man, therefor altering

    statements, the subject is marked in
    bold.                                     The man is in front of the box.
