WHAT IS WOMEN
EMPOWERMENT?
Women's empowerment, in simple
words, is about giving women the
power to make their own choices
and control their own lives. It's
about:
• Feeling good about
themselves: Knowing they are
valuable and capable.
• Having options: Being able to
choose what they want to do with
their lives, like studying, working, or
starting a family.
• Having a voice: Speaking up for
themselves and being heard.
• Having equal rights: Being treated
fairly and having the same
opportunities as men.

EMPOWERMENT?

GOVERNMENT STEPS
• Equality: Right to equality enshrined in the Constitution (Article 14).
• Non-discrimination: Protection from discrimination based on sex (Article 15).
• Fundamental rights: Access to fundamental rights like education and work.
Constitutional rights:
• Hindu Succession Act (1956): Gave women inheritance rights.
• Dowry Prohibition Act (1961): Outlawed the practice of dowry.
• Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act (2013): Safeguarded women in workplaces.
• National Commission for Women (1992): Established a body to investigate women's issues.
Legislative reforms:
• Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan: Increased girls' enrollment in primary schools.
• Kanyasree Prakalpa: Conditional cash transfer scheme to incentivize girls' education.
• Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas: Residential schools for girls in rural areas.
Educational initiatives:
• Self Help Groups (SHGs): Microfinance initiatives to empower women entrepreneurs.
• Mahila Udyam Nidhi: Loan scheme for women entrepreneurs.
• Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sinchai Yojana: Improved access to drinking water, benefiting women.
Economic empowerment:
PROBLEM FACED BY WOMEN
Globally:
• Gender-based violence: This includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as harassment and stalking. It
can occur in the home, workplace, public spaces, and online.
• Inequality: and discrimination: Women often face discrimination based on their gender, leading to unequal access to
education, healthcare, employment, and political participation.
• Sexual and reproductive health challenges: Many women lack access to quality sexual and reproductive
healthcare, including contraception, safe abortion, and maternal care.
• Economic disparities: Women earn less than men globally, and are often overrepresented in informal and precarious
work.
• Harmful traditional practices: Practices like child marriage, female genital mutilation, and honor killings continue to
affect millions of girls and women worldwide.
Specifically
in India:
• Patriarchal societal norms: These norms restrict women's choices and freedoms, and limit their access to
education, employment, and decision-making power.
• High rates of violence against women: India has one of the highest rates of domestic violence and sexual assault in
the world.
• Lack of access to education and healthcare: Many girls, especially in rural areas, are denied access to
education. Women also face challenges accessing quality healthcare services.
• Economic vulnerability: Women are often employed in informal and low-paying jobs, and have limited access to land
and other resources.
• Discrimination based on caste and religion: Women belonging to marginalized communities face additional
discrimination and challenges.
IMPORTANCE
• Individual level:
• Boosts self-esteem and confidence: Feeling empowered
allows women to make their own choices, control their lives, and
pursue their aspirations, leading to a greater sense of self-worth
and fulfillment.
• Enables participation in all spheres: Empowerment opens
doors to education, career opportunities, and political
participation, allowing women to contribute their talents and
perspectives to society.
• Improves health and well-being: When women have control
over their health decisions, access to healthcare, and economic
independence, it leads to better health outcomes for themselves
and their families.
• Community level:
• Strengthens families and communities: When women are
empowered, they can invest in their families'
education, health, and well-being, leading to stronger and more
resilient communities.
• Promotes peace and security: Studies show that societies with
greater gender equality experience less conflict and violence.
• Drives economic development: When women participate
equally in the workforce, economies grow more robustly and
sustainably.
• Global level:
• Achieves Sustainable Development Goals: Gender equality is
essential for achieving all 17 UN Sustainable Development
Goals, addressing global challenges like poverty, hunger, and
climate change.
• Promotes innovation and progress: Diversity of thought and
perspective, fostered by gender equality, leads to more creative
solutions and advancements across various fields.
BENIFIS TO SOCIETY BY
WOMEN
Economic benefits:
• Increased workforce
participation: When women enter
the workforce, it expands the
available talent pool, leading to
increased economic output and
growth. Studies show that closing
the gender gap in labor force
participation could significantly
boost global GDP.
• Improved financial stability for
families: Women's earnings
contribute significantly to household
income, leading to improved
financial stability and poverty
reduction for families and
communities.
Social benefits:
• Stronger families and
communities: Empowered women
invest more in their families'
education, health, and well-
being, contributing to stronger and
more resilient communities.
• Reduced violence and
conflict: Societies with greater
gender equality tend to experience
less violence and conflict. Women
often play key roles in peacebuilding
and conflict resolution initiatives.
• Improved education and health
outcomes: When girls have access
to education and women control
their healthcare decisions, it leads to
better health and educational
outcomes for everyone in society.
Political benefits:
• More representative and
responsive governance: When
women participate in decision-
making processes and hold
leadership positions, governments
are more likely to reflect the needs
and concerns of all citizens.
• Increased transparency and
accountability: Studies show that
women in leadership positions tend
to be more collaborative and
transparent, leading to more
accountable governance.
• Peace and security: Women's
participation in peace negotiations
and security initiatives can lead to
more sustainable and inclusive
solutions.
