WORD PROBLEM EXERCISE
BY CRAMERS RULE
Example-13:
The entry fee at Expo center is Rs.20 for children and Rs.50 for adults.
On a Sunday 2000 people attended the fair and Rs. 85000 is collected.
How many children and how many adults attended the fair at Expo
center.
Solution:
Let x be the number of children
and y be the number of adults
X + Y = 2000
20 X + 50 Y = 85000
By Cramer’s rule
D = [
1 1
20 50
] = (50)(1) – (20)(1) = 50 – 20 = 30
Dx = [
2000 1
85000 50
] = (2000)(50) – (85000)(1)
= 100000 – 85000 = 15000
Dy = [
1 2000
20 85000
] = (85000)(1) – (2000)(20)
= 85000 – 40000 = 45000
X =
Dx
𝐷
=
15000
30
= 500 (children)
Y =
Dy
𝐷
=
45000
30
= 1500 (Adults)
20. Find two numbers whose sum is 49 and whose difference is 5.
(ANSWER: X = 22 , Y = 27 )
21. 8 kg mangoes and 5 kg apples cost Rs. 1050 while one kg mangoes
and two kg apples cost Rs.200. Find the cost of one kg mangoes
and one kg apple.
(ANSWER: X = 100(mangoes per Kg) , Y = 50(Apple per Kg) )
22. A bookseller sold 50 books of statistics. Some were sold at Rs.120
each and the rest at Rs.160 each. The total amount from these
books were Rs.6800. How many books did the bookseller sell at
Rs.120 each?
(ANSWER: X=30 at Rs120 , Y=20 at Rs160 )
23. A dealer sold 200 racquets. Some were sold at Rs.180 each and the
rest at Rs.330 each. The total receipts from these sales were
Rs.48000.How many racquets did the dealer sell at Rs.180 each
and Rs.330 each?
(ANSWER: X=120 at Rs180 , Y=80 at Rs330 )
24. Two books and one copy cost is Rs. 500. Where 3 books and 4
copies cost is Rs. 1000.find the cost of per book and per copy.
(ANSWER: X = 200 per book , Y = 100 per copy )
25. A boy buys 20 pencils for Rs.216. Some cost Rs.10 each and the
rest of Rs.12 each. How many of each kind of pencils has the boy
bought? (ANSWER: X = 12 , Y = 8 )
