 Content
• Introduction
• Working of synchronous machine
• Construction of synchronous machine
• Types of synchronous machine
• Application of synchronous machine
Introduction
• A synchronous machine is an ac rotating machine whose
speed under steady state condition is proportional to the
frequency of
• The magnetic field created by the armature currents rotates
at the same speed as that created by the field current on the
rotor, which is rotating at the synchronous speed, and a
steady torque results. the current in its armature.
 Working principle of synchronous machine
• Synchronous machines generally works on the principle of
“electromagnetic induction”, when the magnetic flux is cut by
a conductor, an e.m.f is induced in the conductor.
• The direction of this e.m.f is found by Fleming’s right hand
rule.
• The magnitude of this induced e.m.f , as per the faraday’s law
is found by rate of cut of magnetic flux by conductor.
• The working can be explained similar as the working of the
D.C generator. In D.C generator magnetic field is produce by
field poles and the field is stationary and armature conductors
are rotated mechanically. E.M.F is induced in the armature
conductor. It is collected from commutator and brushes.
• In a synchronous generator, a DC current is applied to the rotor
winding producing a rotor magnetic field. The rotor is then
turned by external means producing a rotating magnetic field,
which induces a 3-phase voltage within the stator winding.
• Field windings are the windings producing the main magnetic
field (rotor windings)
• armature windings are the windings where the main voltage is
induced (stator windings).
• In synchronous machine commutator is replaced by slip rings,
so e.m.f is collected by brushes from the slip rings.
• This system of stationary magnetic field and rotating
conductor is adopted for very small capacity generators and it
is not so popular for high voltage generators.
• The other most popular system of A.C generators is the
armature conductors are stationary and magnetic fields are
rotating.
 Types of Synchronous Machine
• According to the arrangement of the field and armature
windings, synchronous machines may be classified as
1. Rotating armature type
2. Rotating field type
1. Rotating-Field Type:
• In this type, the field system is rotating member and armature
system is stationary member.
• The field winding arranged on rotor part. The field system
,mounted an shaft as shown in figure.
• DC supply is needed for field winding. This DC supply is fed
through slip-ring brush arrangement.
• The field winding connections are carried over shaft. This
connection are properly insulated from shaft.
• The winding connection are given to sleep-rings. The
number of slip-rings are require in our case Is 2.
• The DC supply used is 110 volt, 200 volt, 230 volt, 400volt.
• When DC supply fed to field winding it generates magnetic
field and since field system is rotating member, the
stationary armature winding cuts this flux thus an e.m.f. is
induced in armature winding.
• The 3-phase ac voltage at output can be obtained.
2. Rotating-Armature Type
• In this type, field system is stationary and armature system is
rotating member.
• The armature system is supported on shaft.
• The DC supply can be directly connected with field winding
terminals.
• The armature is rotating member. It carries winding in slots
as shown in figure.
• When armature rotates than the armature cuts the flux thus
e.m.f. is induced in armature winding.
• Than we get 3-phase supply by use of slip-rings.
