AS WORLD DEVLOPMENT Is this the course for me? You need to make sure that you have an interest in Development Issues and be willing to actively read newspapers to keep up to date. Do I need any qualifications to study it? Ideally you need to have studied GCSE Geography as this will provide a firm foundation for study, you need to also ask yourself will you cope with the coursework element of the course?
AS WORLD DEVLOPMENT How will I be assessed? The AS World Development course is 70% exam and 30% coursework. The coursework is a portfolio which students complete over the course of the year. The first half of the portfolio is three article analyses which link to Theme 1, and the second half is a comparison essay which links to Theme 2. What will I learn? The course is divided into two themes. One will be taught from Sept – Dec and the second from Jan – Apr. Theme 1 – Development, Resources and Global Citizenship Theme 2 – Poverty & Inequality
AS WORLD DEVLOPMENT How successful have students been in the past? AS World Development has been running at Homewood School since 2007/08 and for the past two exam seasons there has seen a 100% pass rate. This is possible, through working hard, completing additional research through the internet and reading newspapers. Who teaches the course? Mr Crumbie is the core teacher of the course and is assisted by one other member of the Geography department who usually oversees the coursework element.
