“Television has proved that people will look at anything rather than each other.” – Ann Ladders, Pen Name created by the Chicago Sun-Times by Eppie Lederer. In today’s modern society people know more of the media then that of their own family. So much so that the people of today are not actually from today, they are living in tomorrow, because that is where the news of their famous celebrity comes from. When people focus all of their energy and brain capacity to that of the media, they lose sight of what is going on around them, they begin to put on a set of rose coloured glasses once more because they cannot see anything else then the media. The huge media influence has 3 main negative effects on the people of North America, those being that the media brings in a distance into the families household, it gives a reason for people to not communicate with others, and the biggest one being that the media is starting to become more important than bigger problems in the world, poverty human rights, government oppression to name a few.
Since the beginning of the media age, mainly being at the creation and mass production of the television, people have been drawn towards it for a sense of entertainment. In most cases the entire family will sit down to enjoy their favourite shows, or watch a movie. This is what people see through media commercials, and can relate to it so they believe this to be the single truth which is to be believed. While in some cases it may be true, the media has a tight hold on the people who consume it. People tend to not realize the flip side to their perfect truth. Upon the creation of the commercial media, homes have been brought together but have more commonly been torn and ripped apart. Commercials advertise their products and the quick process of ripping apart a family. The children want to buy the product, due to the mass amounts of colours which are thrown into the commercial, the parents then inform their children that they cannot buy the product and the children retaliate with a small but ever growing despise for their inability to have the product. The process starts off quickly, but slows down due to the child’s ever growing understanding that the term “Money doesn’t grow on trees” is in fact true. Even as the children progress into the early stages of teenager and young adult more commercials are implanted in their head, but a new age brings a new set of shows and movies the kid can watch. Filled with violence and derogatory words the teen’s mind, which is ever so mouldable by outside influences, gains a new rebellious attitude because the character in the movie he just watched is believed to be cool because of his attire, actions, and gear which he has. With a renewed sense of want, the early process of “Want, Decline, and Despise” begins once more though with more despise being brought into the argument then before, due to the newly acquired derogatory terms and slang. The adolescent then acquires a sense that the interactions with others are the cause of the negativity being brought to the hypothetical table.
With the media growing ever so big, more and more people are being dragged into the scandalous activities which the Celebrities partake in. More and more people have become interested in commercial media gossip since the dawn of the television era. As people begin a journey down the road of media gossip they begin to read more media focused magazines and they begin to invest in these magazines, not only money but the time to read and absorb every piece of news off of the pages into their minds, that they begin to lose connections with their friends, and in some cases even their own family. This causes people to lose their sense of placement with the people they once loved, causing people to dive deeper into their media addiction as some would argue. As people become addicted to the media they begin to lose focus of other aspects of their life, and in a large scale sense, we lose our ability to notice things happening around the world.
With the focus being on the media, and the Celebrity scandals which have swept across the nation for years and years, we have not been able to focus on more pressing matters which infest our planet. If no research was to but put in to anything many things would go unnoticed, such as the predicament the Homosexual group in Uganda faces. On October 14, 2009 David Bahati an MP in Uganda, submitted a bill which would allow the legal killing of the homosexual populace in Uganda. As homosexuality is already outlawed in the Nation, it is a bill which the Parliament is highly considering passing, but the vote has not yet been taken. With media focus being mainly on those which are close to home, where people embarrass themselves or cause a social uprising, we would never learn of these acts being committed. Another such case could be argued with the Genocide-like Acts which had taken place in Rwanda in 1994. Given very little media attention no one, unless one was to undergo a research or tour of the country, would know about or even care about. Such acts could have been stopped sooner, and in some cases could even be prevented, if people were exposed to this stuff as vividly as they are with the media personalities.
The media influence on the young generation of today, and the next leaders of tomorrow, has major negative effects on everyone, being the negativity being brought into the household and family affairs, the ever so common media creating a hypothetical barrier between people, and it surpassing interest levels than that of world affairs. As a youth, we must stand up against the major media conglomerates which only feed us with the scandals of yesterday’s celebrity gossip. What you can do to change our world rests in what you want to do, research global affairs, stay informed on current events. Request your school to bring in people from around the world to share stories of these events. There is never an easy fix for these issues, but determination and the willingness to help can help improve the lives of others, and in turn improving the lives of everyone.
