Suezmax freight rates faced challenges in early 2016 but saw some improvements later in the year. West African crude oil exports to North America increased significantly, with 95 more voyages compared to 2015, though attacks in Nigeria reduced production. Lifting of Iran sanctions and increased Indian imports from Iran resulted in more Suezmax shipments. While total Suezmax cargoes increased slightly in the first 7 months of 2016, voyages to the Atlantic basin decreased as trades diversified more to the Pacific. Growth in voyages from South America to Asia also added to demand. However, new vessel deliveries increased supply levels and may limit rate improvements going forward.
