Structure of a Research/Scientific Paper
 Title
 Abstract
 Introduction
 Literature Review/Survey
 Problem Definition
 Methodology/System Performance
 Experimental, Analytical, Statistical Section (Some papers require
this section to be at the end)
 Results and Discussion/Performance Analysis
 Conclusions
 Acknowledgments

 Supporting Information
Title
 Title /Abstract often used to decide whether to read the paper.
 Compose a title that is simple, attractive and accurately reflects
the investigation.
 Summarize the title in 2-10 words.
 Write Authors name, Designation, Organization, E-mail, etc. at
footer/top of the first page.
 Points to be avoid
 Phrases : Investigation, Study, Novel, First-Time, Facile, etc. in
the title or abstract. Such descriptions do not impress the reader
or the reviewer.
 Acronyms that are known only to specialized community.
Abstract
 Summarize the paper in a paragraph or two
 First couple of sentences should focus on what the study is about.
 Includes major findings in a style that a general readership can
read and understand also contributions, name of study area,
approach, etc. (i.e., avoid detailed experimental procedures and
data.) Keep it short and effective.
 Be creative in generating curiosity
 Encourage reader to read the paper
 Write Keywords, preferably 5-6
 Keep it simple and informative
Introduction (cum Literature survey)
 The introduction has several parts:
1. Start the section with a general background and motivation of the
topic (1 paragraph).
2. Overview of the paper and contributions by researchers (1-3
paragraphs).
3. Add all citations at proper place from Google scholar.
4. Point out issues that are being addressed in the present work.
5. Explain precisely how your work is efficient than others.
6. Objectives /Goals
8. Aim to solve the problem statement.
 Do not do this- Cut and paste from overall paper or vice versa.
Methodology/System Performance
 Study Area/Data Availability/Tools/ Methodology.
 Divide this section into Materials & Methods, Characterization,
Measurements, Flow Chart and Algorithm.
 Gather all important data, analysis, plots and tables.
Results and Discussion/Performance Analysis
 Describe the results/models (i.e. Experimental, Analytical, Statistical
Analysis)
 Figures and tables should be at mentioned place with there appropriate
explanation.
 Give equation numbers to those which are used.
 Discuss how your data is compared or contrast with the previous results.
 Include results plot, images for visual understanding.
 Points to be avoid
 Excessive focus on results without any discussion.
 Citation in results and discussion section.
Conclusions
 Include major findings followed by brief discussion.
 perspectives and/or application of present work to other disciplines.
 Points to be avoided
 rewrite/repeat the introduction/abstract sentences.
 Statements with “Investigated” or “Studied” are not conclusions!
 Contribution:
 Write down about your contribution in this work.
 Future Scope/Work :
1. Mention the topics left for study related to the goal.
2. Highlight the doors that your work opens up, create excitement.
3. Give the constraints of your work.
 Acknowledgments
 Remember to thank the funding agency
 Colleagues, scientists, technicians who might have provided
assistance.
 References
 Use standard reference method from Google scholar.
 Do not include irrelevant references (Which are not used in the
paper)
 Supporting Information/Appendix
 Include methods, analysis, blank experiments, additional data.
Points to remember
 Use affirmative sentences.
 Organize the paper with a logical flow like a story.
 Explain all the terminologies before their use.
 Justification about your experimental results with your objectives.
 Develop an outline –
 Write – Revise, Revise, Revise, Revise
 Find out synonyms for repeated words.
 Use the templates given by the conference or journal manuscripts.
 Write with considering the person has a zero knowledge about the topic.
 Editing
 Paraphrase the sentences with proper synonyms.
 Make sentences brief.
 Use active voice for writing
o Active sentences are clearer and more direct; passive are more indirect.
o Avoid passive writing when possible without sacrificing clarity.
o “We” is acceptable as a way of avoiding passive voice.
 “Vermont is a state that attracts visitors because of its winter sports.”
Points to remember
 Clear writing requires clear thinking.
 Polite scripting.
 Use only universal abbreviations.
Toolset: For writing the paper
 LATEX(for document preparation)
 BibTEX (for bibliography)
 Beamer (for Presentation)
 Points to avoid
 Use of unauthenticated results, data and discussions .
 Unnecessary discussion about a less important topic.
 Discussion with only statistical results.
 Wrong Spells, Grammar, Sentence structure, Punctuation
Selection of a journal
 With specific area of research.
 Readers of the journal.
 Aim 2-3 journals with their impact factor.
 Find out the journal’s submission criteria and format.
 Tip: Use some citations from the same journal publication
Before Submission
 Read the finalized paper carefully.
 Get feedback from advisor and colleagues.
 Make sure the paper is read by at least one or two colleagues who
is not familiar with the specific work.
 Provide a cover letter to the editor along with a brief paragraph.
 Highlight the importance of this work and names of possible
reviewers.
 Consent of all authors in the finalized version of the paper.
 Submit the paper online along with copyright form.
 Paraphrase to all content, avoid Plagiarism.
Paraphrase!!!
Plagiarism v. Paraphrasing Samples
Direct quote from research:
“Japan’s beautiful Mount Fuji last erupted in 1707 and is now classified as
dormant. Dormant volcanoes show no signs of activity, but they may erupt
in the future.”
Non-plagiarized paraphrase:
Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, is actually a dormant volcano.
Dormant means that it is not active. The last time Mount Fuji erupted was
in 1707, and there is always the possibility of a future eruption.

Revisions and galley proof
 After submission of the paper, it is reviewed by reviewers.
 Reviewers point out deficiencies and/or suggestions to improve the
scientific content.
 Read their comments carefully. (If reviewer misunderstands a point,
the point probably needs revision or additional support.).
 Do not blame the reviewer for his/her misunderstanding!
 Be polite and respectful when disagreeing a reviewer’s comment.
 Include a point-by-point explanation of changes made in the text in
response to reviewers’ comments.
 Once again, carefully read the paper for its accuracy in presenting the
data.
 Submit the revised version.
 Once accepted for publication you should receive the galley proof
within a month. This is one last chance to make any final corrections.
What to do if a paper gets rejected..
 Read the comments carefully given by the reviewers.
 Make corrections and proper changes to submit the paper for another
journal.
 Try to improve your defined problem.
 For the queries related to review, please feel free to contact the editorial
office.
 “English is not my native language” is not a valid justification for
reviewer who cannot comprehend.
 Reviewers do not wish to review papers that are not readable. Badly
written papers are often recommended as “REJECT” by the Reviewers
 ACS Publication office helps to edit the language for accepted
manuscripts, but this only happens if the English was good enough to be
reviewed.
Terminologies of Journals
 Springer (Germany), Elsevier, Wiley are global publishers that
publishes books, e-books and peer-reviewed journals in science,
technical ,etc.
 Elsevier (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɛlzəviːr]) is an information and
analytics company and one of the world's major providers of scientific,
technical, and medical information. It was established in 1880 as a
publishing company. ...
 Scopus is an online abstract and indexing service provided through
Elsevier.
 ScienceDirect is a website which provides subscription-based access to
a large database of scientific and medical research.
 The Science Citation Index (SCI) is a citation index originally
produced by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).
 Impact factors are calculated yearly starting from 1975 . It is
commonly used to evaluate the relative importance of a journal.
 No. of 2006&2007 citations in 2008
 IF(2008) = No of papers published in 2006&2007
 The misleading metrics and fake impact factors have damaged the
prestige and reliability of scientific research and scholarly journals. ...
Some names that they use are Universal Impact Factor (UIF),
Global Impact Factor (GIF), and Citefactor, and there even is
a fake Thomson Reuters Company.
 The h-index can be calculated automatically
in Web of Science and Scopus or manually.
an h index of 20 is good, 40 is outstanding, and
60 is truly exceptional.
 i10-Index - the number of publications with
 at least 10 citations. This very simple
 & straightforward measure is only used by Google Scholar.
 Volume typically refers to the number of years the publication has been
circulated, and issue refers to how many times that periodical has been
published during that year.
 A digital object identifier (DOI) is a (link), The publisher assigns
a DOI when your article is published and made available electronically.
 The best place to find a DOI for an article is the website CrossRef.org
 An International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an eight-digit
serial number used to uniquely identify a serial publication. The ISSN is
especially helpful in distinguishing between serials with the same title.
ISBN, which consists of ten digits, is used to identify books.
 The IEEE provides SCOPUS with all of the IEEE Xplore digital library
content so that the bibliographic information (what is seen on an abstract page
in IEEE Xplore, including the abstract) can be made visible.
 ResearcherID (developed by Thomas Reuters and used in Web of
Science) and Scopus Author ID (developed by Elsevier and used
in Scopus) are two examples of these efforts.
 The ORCID iD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) - a
nonproprietary alphanumeric code to uniquely identify scientific and
other academic authors and contributors. ORCID is "a platform-
agnostic identifier."
 What is a fake journal ?
 Look carefully, who is publisher of the journals?
 Investigate who are the editor-in-chief, senior editors, and the reviewers
of the journals.
 Identify how many volumes and issues that the journals have been
published
 Investigate the review processes.
