Window Studio is a neighborhood art center in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn dedicated to creating a new paradigm of community art. Window Studio invites passersby and local residents to watch artists at work in the studio on a daily basis, come in to discuss the artwork in progress, and make art themselves, thereby bringing art as an aesthetic experience and a social practice into the context of everyday life. Window Studio offers three core programs at affordable or no cost to the public.
Window Studio Artist-in-Residence (AIR): an intensive 6-month studio artist residency designed to immerse artists in their studio practice while sharing their process with the community. Artists from all media are invited to apply. Four residencies, two held concurrently, are offered each year. Emerging artists living and working in the Bedford-Stuyvesant community are given preference but all New York City artists are welcome to apply. Since an important component of the Window Studio AIR program is to interact with members of the community, applicants must be able to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week working in the studio. The artist will also design and teach a class per semester and offer workshops during the 6-month residency. The selected artist will receive unlimited studio access during the 6-month period as permitted by operating hours. The artist will also have a culminating exhibition in the Window Studio Gallery
Window Studio Workshops: Artist-led workshops are offered evening and weekends for all ages and levels of experience. In keeping with the open, inclusive nature of Window Studio, workshops are available to the public on a drop-in basis or for a monthly membership. Supplies and instruction are included in the low-cost membership fee ($10/session; $40/month) with financial aid available upon request. A variety of media and techniques are explored, including observational drawing from a model, outdoor sketching, as well as abstract and experimental approaches. Participants discover great art of the past as well as the work of contemporary artists. One museum field trip included per semester.
Artist Resource Center, Exhibits and Events:
Window Studio is committed to supporting local artists from Bedford-Stuyvesant, emerging artists & arts professionals, and disadvantaged artists, through a variety of resource programs. Window Studio hosts quarterly exhibits of artists-in-residence work, as well as one open- call juried exhibition by an emerging curator each year. Other cultural events include Art-in-the-Garden parties held in collaboration with other Bedford-Stuyvesant
arts organizations.
NEW this fall: Open Studio Space for artists! Available on a daily or monthly basis.
