WTF is XMPP?

XMPP is an almost 10 year old open standard protocol for instant messaging and presence. It is used by services like Google Talk, Yahoo video chat, and parts of AIM. XMPP uses XML streams to send small messages and is extensible so new features can be added without permission. It is also secure, federated, and provides basic building blocks for presence, messaging, and querying that can be expanded upon.
