This document provides background on school-centered HIV and AIDS care and support programs in Southern Africa. It notes that schools play an important role in HIV prevention education but also in supporting treatment, care and support given high HIV prevalence rates. Schools are well positioned to provide these services as they are often more accessible than health centers, especially in rural areas. The document discusses how practice has evolved to use schools as community resources and outlines the goals of the UNESCO technical consultation, which was to identify best practices and strategies for scaling up school-centered care and support programs.
