Summer Homework
Over the summer it is important that you begin the course in September with the same
amount of work completed as your peers to ensure that we are thoroughly into the
coursework and in a solid place to begin your planning work.
The following is the work we have produced in class, with additional summer activities and
research. Completing this work puts you in a solid position for next year!
If there are any research activities which you wish to undertake independently please do!
The more scope and difference between your blogs, the more you are reading in to the
subject.
Most importantly every post MUST include:
 What have I done?
 What have I learnt?
 How will this impact on my final production?
 Blog Post Content
Introduction Introduce yourself, your candidate number and what this blog is
designed for.
Andrew Goodwin
Conventions Analysis
Identify the use of conventions (as detailed by Andrew Goodwin)
with examples from existing music videos. We looked at Lady
Gaga’s Telephone as an example.
Star Motif and Star
Image
Explain the difference between the two and identify artists as
examples who have an established star motif and/or image.
Richard Dyer and the
‘Paradox of the Star’
Explain your understanding, supported with examples of artists
who the theory could be applied to.
Audience Theory Uses and Gratifications model and the Effects model. Both of
these theories need to be explained clearly. We did Chase and
Status ‘Time’ in class, and then you had to choose your own video
to analyse.
Copyright info with
letter.
We learnt about copyright laws; you should summarise your
knowledge of copyright, linked to how important it is that you
attain permission and then produce a letter to send to the owners
of the track.
Research into
audience including
survey and results
analysis
You need to explain psychographics, demographics and the C4
research into ‘Tribes’ in the UK. Create a survey to understand
your target audience further and find an imaginative way of
displaying information. Remember to spread it on social media
and screenshot your efforts to get it out there!
Homework and Expectations for
Presentation of Work
In addition to the work on the page before, which ideally should already have been completed
as it is just a list of past homework and classwork tasks, you must complete three posts on
the following:
Most importantly every post MUST include:
 What have I done?
 What have I learnt?
 How will this impact on my final production?
 Laura Mulvey – what does the theory suggest (reference any resources you use to define
the theory) and how significant and prominent is the ‘male gaze’ in music videos? Find
examples to illustrate your point.
 Genre research – based on the genre your audience favoured, create a brief history
(timeline?) of events which helped to establish the genre and its audience. Again,
reference your sources; you do not just KNOW this information therefore you need to
include the links the webpages which helped you.
 Artist research – if you know the artist you will be using then conduct research into
them. Produce a biography, identify their star image and motif; does the ‘male gaze’
feature prominently in their choice of outfits and the camera shots used? Screen shot
and reference. If you haven’t selected yet, this will be a task you will have to catch
up on.
Remember – YOU MUST USE
A VARIETY OF MEDIA
PLATFORMS. Anyone who
JUST types large amounts of
text onto their blog, or
creates videos and slideshows
which are just the research
written out on to slides will be
asked to re-do the work and
present it differently.
