Singular and Plural - Unit 1 of Oxford Grammar
A singular noun refers to a single object Like most nouns, singular nouns can be used to
refer to people, places, things, or ideas. Singular nouns always refer to one person or one
thing.
Plural nouns are nouns that refer to more than one person, place, or thing. In general,
plural nouns are made by adding -s or -es to the ends of singular nouns. However, this
isn’t always the case. Sometimes a noun may change spelling or may turn into a
completely different word. Plural nouns always use a plural verb in a sentence and aren’t
preceded by the articles a and an.

Possessive Adjectives
● These describe a noun and come before it.
● Examples: my, your, his, her, our, their.
● Example in a sentence: That is my book. ("My" tells us who the book belongs to.)
Possessive Apostrophes
● Show ownership by adding an apostrophe, sometimes with an s.
● Rules:
● Add ’s to singular nouns: The cat’s toy (the toy belongs to the cat).
● Add just an ’ to plural nouns ending in s: The dogs’ kennel (the kennel belongs to
the dogs).
● Add ’s to plural nouns that don’t end in s: The children’s books (the books belong
to the children).
Quick Tip:
