- 2. You Can’t Hide From the Light! Mk 4:21-25 Also He said to them, "Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand? "For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light. "If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." Then He said to them, "Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given. "For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him."
- 3. Truly light is a wonderful blessing, imagine a world without light! Would you want to live in a world of complete darkness even if you could? ▪ Everyone one would be stumbling around in the dark! ▪ We wouldn’t be able to get much done, almost everything we do requires light! ▸Driving a car ▸Cooking food ▸Working
- 4. The sad truth is that many in the world are doing exactly this spiritually speaking! ▪ Joh 3:19-21"And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. "For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. "But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."
- 5. From the beginning there has been a contrast between light & darkness! ▪ Gen 1:1-5 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
- 6. A young boy went to Europe one summer an got to visit the old cathedrals of the past. As he visited one after another he saw the stained glass portraits of the disciples. Upon returning home his Sunday school teacher asked him what he liked most about his trip and he said the portraits of the disciples. The teacher asked him, what is a disciple? He said, a disciple is a person that let’s the light shine through!
- 7. I. Light Has Purpose! ▪ Let’s begin by reading together the words of Jesus! ▸Mt 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. "Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” ▪ Our light is of no use if we are unwilling to share it with others!
- 8. We as Christians are to be out “shining” among men! Mk. 4:21 Also He said to them, "Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand?” ▪ A light shines the brightest in the darkest place! ▪ Would a light be of any use if it was placed under a basket or bed? But, what if it is placed on a candlestick ▸How many of you remember the children song “this little light of mine?” ▸The point of the song is that “I’m going to let it shine!”
- 9. The purpose of light is to bring people out of darkness! The purpose of light is to dispell darkness! ▪ It is only by the power of the light that we can overcome darkness! ▪ Don't become guilty of “hiding from the light!” This can be hiding it from self or from others! (See. Rom. 13:11-14) ▸There are things to “put off” works of darkness! (Rom. 13:12) ▸There are things to “put on” the armor of light/the Lord Jesus Christ! (Rom. 13:12, 14)

Light Has Power! ▪ When faced with the light, one of two things will always happen! ▸One will either remain in the light, by dispelling the darkness! ▸Or, one will seek to hide from the light, because they are living in darkness! ▪ When we come into contact with the light we find out who we really are! (Ps. 119:105) “Your Word is...” ▸“A lamp to my feet” where I am at! ▸“A light to my path” where I am going!

It is important to remember that it is only “in the light” that salvation is found! 1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. ▪ A “key” word in this verse is the little two letter word “if” a conjunction that is a conditional particle, meaning what follows is “only” true if one meets the condition! ▪ In logic we would call this verse “a if, then syllogism” if this is true, then this will follow

Light has the power to overcome darkness! ▪ 1Pet 2:9-12 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.
- 13. III. Light Has Privilege! The Three-fold Privilege of Light! Mk. 4:23,24 ▪ Cautioned! ▸“Pay attention to what you hear” ▪ Counseled! ▸“With the measure you use, it will be measured to you” ▪ Comforted! ▸“All still more will be added to you”
- 14. Truly it is a great privilege to be a child of light, but with this privilege comes responsibility! ▪ Light gives us the ability to see clearly! ▪ Light gives us the direction that we need! ▪ Light gives us the means to teach others! ▪ We will be held accountable for each of these!
- 15. IV. Light Has Promise! Mk. 4:25 "For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him." cf. Mt. 25:29 ▪ To understand this verse it is helpful to understand where else it is found! ▸The Parable of the Talents (Mt. 25:14-30) ▸These two verses in the original language are almost exactly the same! –To understand one will help us understand the other and vice versa! –As found in both of these we must “use it or loses it!”
- 16. “Having truth decay? Then brush up on the Bible!” ▪ There is a promise, the more we abide in the light, the brighter it will get! The less we abide in the light the darker it will get! ▪ The truth about the light is this, when we go out and share the light with others, we don't run out of light, but rather more light is given! ▪ But if we just shut it up inside, then over time the light will die out in us!

Conclusion: ▪ We can’t hide from the light unless we want to end up in darkness! ▪ I ask you today, are you walking in the light with Jesus? ▪ If you are not yet a Christian, then today is the day, tomorrow maybe too late! ▪ One must “hear” (Rom. 10:17) “believe” (Jn. 8:24) “repent” (Lk. 13:3) “confess” (Mt. 10:32) “be baptized” (Mk. 16:16) and then “walk in the light!” (1 Jn. 1:7)
