This document summarizes a presentation given at the Second International Flemion Seminar in Zurich, Switzerland on June 13-14, 2012. The presentation discusses the production and purification of salt for use in membrane chloralkali plants. It notes that salt must be highly purified to avoid membrane damage, hydrogen evolution, and other issues. The HYDROSAL process is introduced as a way to purify salt through elutriation, hydroclassification, and hydroextraction using brine. Test results show the HYDROSAL process can purify commercial vacuum salt to very low levels of impurities.
