Reader 8 Unit 10 – The Gold Frame
1. Who was the owner of ‘The Modern Frame Works’?
Answer: Datta was the owner of ‘The Modern Frame Works’.
2. Why does the author say that he fitted with the shop with complete harmony?
Answer: The shop was an extra large wooden packing case. The floor was full of things needed for framing,
and every inch of wall was covered with different kinds of pictures. Thin and timber complexioned Datta,
sitting hunched up looked as worn out and weathered as the shop he sat in.
3. How would he normally trace things that he misplaced? What was its effect?
Answer: He would stand up and shake his dhoti vigorously to get the object. The pictures on the wall would
gently swing.
4. How did Datta react when the customer approached him?
Answer: When the customer approached he ignored him with his usual indifference.
5. Why did Datta give a slide glance at the portrait of the customer?
Answer: The customer showering praises and paying homage to the person in the portrait was not anything
new for Datta. He generally came across many such people.
6. What did Datta feel about the photograph?
Answer: Datta felt that it was just another portrait of an elderly person, with the usual whiskers and top-
heavy flowing turban.
7. What kind of a frame did the customer choose?
Answer: He chose an ornate frame with gold leaves and winding creepers with an oval-cut mount.
8. What was Datta’s experience with his customers?
Answer: The customers never came punctually. They either came days in advance or came months later.
Some never returned to take the pictures at all.
9. Why did Datta start working the customer’s photograph the next morning?
Answer: His customer came four days in advance and asked if the portrait was ready. Datta realised the
customer’s obsessive attachment to the photograph. So he started getting it ready.
10. What happened to the picture? How did he solve the problem?
Answer: Dutta’s pencil stub was missing. As usual, to locate it, he stood up to shake the folds of his dhoti
with the result that a tin containing white enamel paint fell on his customer’s picture , ruining it.
Datta brought down an old box containing unclaimed pictures from which he chose one closely resembling
the photograph, to replace it.
11. How did he plan to face the customer if his trick was discovered?
Answer: He planned to challenge the customer and even rehearsed what to tell him if he discovered the
fraud.
He was going to say ... “look, my dear man, I don’t know who’s been fooling you! That’s the picture you
brought here for framing. Take it or throw it away!”
Challenge Question
12. Describe Datta’s mounting tension and the sudden relief he gets in the end.
Answer: Datta’s fast increasing pulse upon seeing the customer. Customer removing the wrapper- struck by
the grandeur of the frame- fell silent- Datta waiting to be caught for his fraud- suddenly the customer
became serious- when questioned Datta rehearsed his dialogue – but before he could open his mouth the
customer about Datta about the frame – the mount but not about the picture Datta relieved
