What is learning?
When somebody says that a
student needs to “know”
something ….

They should be asked to add “in
order to …”

The Intentions Of Kids When They
                Come To School

    • Get Grades
    • Serve Time
    • Socialize …and not necessarily in this order!

“A teachers’ job is not to teach

• (p) "Unit of credit" means a measure of credit that may be awarded to a student for
satisfactory completion of a particular course or subject. A full unit of credit is credit that is
awarded for satisfactory completion of a course or subject that is offered for and generally
requires 120 clock-hours to complete. Credit may be awarded in increments based upon the
amount of time a course or subject is offered and generally requires to complete. Individual
students may be awarded credit based upon demonstrated knowledge of the content of a
course or subject, regardless of the amount of time spent by the student in the course or
    subject.

• Our Suggestion ...

• (p) “Unit of credit” means a measure of credit that may be awarded to a student for
satisfactory demonstration of mastery of a set of standards which comprise a "course."

• The individual who validates mastery of the identified standards must be certified in the state
of Kansas in the appropriate subject area.

How Does Learning Work?
    • You have a goal (something that you want to happen)
    • You have an expectation that a plan of action will
      achieve it
    • The plan fails (this is what it means to have an
      important experience … expectation failure)
    • You need an explanation of why your expectation was
wrong (this is called thinking -- or teaching)
    • You adapt an old explanation or someone provides you
      with a new one
    • You create a new expectation and try again …

                                                         10

Any real learning experience includes:
    • An actual experience
    • A story that demands telling about that
