This document discusses the characteristics of Massively Scalable Data Centers (MSDCs) and some of the challenges they pose for network design. MSDCs have very large numbers of servers and virtual machines, unpredictable east-west traffic flows, and objectives of maximizing resource utilization and flexibility while reducing costs. Common enterprise network architectures can struggle to meet these challenges, with problems like poor server-to-server capacity and static network assignments. The document explores some alternative approaches used by MSDCs.
