Why? By using quotes gathered from interviews, you can represent more individuals and add life to the stories you write. The yearbook is an historical record of events of a certain school year.
Make sure you are talking to the right person Know why you’re interviewing the subject Make an appointment Prepare plenty of meaningful questions Begin with a possible ANGLE in mind. Example: Your feature is about what Mr. Ikeda, the math teacher, does on weekends. Don’t ask for his thoughts on classroom discipline. Do ask, “What’s your favorite fishing spot?”
What to wear: Dress the part Rapport: Give the interviewee a reason to trust you by establishing a rapport. Asking the questions: Avoid the “yes” and “no” answer by asking open-ended questions. Begin each question with one of the 5Ws or H. On and off-the-record: a matter of ethics. Let your conscience be your guide. If you are questioning it, DON’T use it. Taking notes: Tape recorder vs a pencil and notebook. Listen carefully, write key words and phrases and use your memory. Wrapping it up: Double-check the spelling of all NAMES, clarify anything you don’t understand and ask if you may call back for additional info or verification. Organizing the Info: Find a quiet place and go right to work after the interview. Write down anything you remember, especially quotes, right away. Transcribe your notes: Sort through and pick out what will be important to the story or angle. Don’t throw away anything. You may need your notes later as a reference. Arrange the quotes in the order of the story. Organize your Material: Colored markers, cut them apart and spread them all over the desk. Do whatever you need to do so you understand where you’re going with the story. A good interview will result in good quotes, and quotes practically write the story for you.
