What is Dimensional Management Engineering? • DME is a sub-division of Dimension Control Engineering associated with Design & Development • As the name implies, it deals in managing with the dimensions in virtual manufacturing sector • They helps to analyze and confirm the dimension required for a component without altering its functionality • There are many software which helps in achieving the Dimensional Management. One such software is Teamcenter. • 3-2-1 principle, GD&T are some of the key principles and concepts used in DME

DME in Automotive sector They helps in creating Locators, Measuring points, Co-ordinated Cut planes, etc… on BIW components and assemblies Locators points are mainly assigned based on the 3-2-1 principle. This principle is the basic principle one learn in Jigs & Fixture. (Refer 5th Slide) DME team helps the automotive sector in manufacturing the checking fixtures, BIW parts with no functionality errors GD&T concepts also helps DME in designating values for parts as it is international language for describing parts.
- 6. 3-2-1 Principle • The part is in contact with the primary datum plane with a minimum of three points on the surface, which arrests 5 degrees of freedom (Z Axis and 4 rotational degrees) • The secondary datum comes in contact with the part with a minimum of two points and it arrests 2 degrees of freedom (Y axis and one rotational degree) • The part when contacts the tertiary datum with a minimum of one point, another 2 degrees of freedom get arrested (X axis and one rotational degree)
