Here are the main types of structural information that can be included in a building information model (BIM):
- Structural grids/layout - The layout and coordination of structural elements like columns, beams, floors, foundations, etc. This ensures spatial coordination between architectural and structural components.
- Structural components - Modeling of individual structural elements like columns, beams, slabs, foundations, etc. with accurate geometric and non-graphic property information.
- Material takeoff - Quantities of materials like concrete, steel, rebar, etc. required for the structural system can be automatically calculated from the model.
- Structural analysis model - The model can be used to generate analysis models for structural analysis software like R
