The human brain contains over 100 billion neurons that process signals from external stimuli. Sensory neurons detect stimuli and convert them into electrochemical signals that travel through the peripheral and central nervous systems to the brain. In the brain, interneurons transmit signals between neurons until the relevant neurons are activated, causing electrochemical reactions that trigger responses by motor neurons through the peripheral nervous system.

- 12. The signal will need to jump across the gap between the two synapses
- 13. Signal triggers a chemical reaction in the presynaptic terminal
- 14. Chemical signal travels across synaptic gap
- 15. Chemical signal is received and travels along dendrite to the next neuron’s cell body
- 16. Processed information triggers an electrochemical reaction. It will travel the reverse route from CNS to motor neurons in the PNS which will activate the body’s response
